Shaving without razor burn etc. :)

Hi, so I'm a 25 year old non binary trans woman. If this post isn't suited to this particular forum please feel free to move it. :)

Anyway, I mention both aspects of how I identify (non binary trans woman/female leaning androgyne) to give you a fuller idea of my gender. Regardless, the point is that obviously I prefer to shave everyday if at all possible because of dysphoria etc. As such, I'm curious to know what people would recommend for a person/woman with sensitive skin. I'm looking to buy an electric shaver as I find that reduces razor burn but am obviously trying to balance out the irritation of shaving to my skin with getting as clean a shave as possible. Any thoughts are greatly appreciated. Thanks. :)

I totally just went through this last night. I ended up at CVS and bought Bump Patrol. I can't thumbs up this product enough. I am a MtF so I am pretty hairy and wanted to shave everything. I will warn you it burns like hell when you slap it on but it almost immediately took all the discomfort away. They claim it takes 48 hours sometimes depending on the person but I put mine on before bed and woke up this morning just fine. I will be using this from now on immediately after shaving. Hopefully this helps. Also try using a shaving cream with aloe in it.

Thanks for such a prompt answer. :)

I'm in the UK, what is CVS please and is Bump Patrol a hair removal cream or similar? :)

Hi Artemisia,

I'm sorry if this sounds rude but don't you have that thing called Google in the Uk, too? Sorry, I really couldn't resist...

I'll help you out:
CVS -> http://cvs.com
Bump Patrol -> http://bfy.tw/5PBY

Cheers ;-)

Yes as it happens I do indeed have Google. However, I wasn't sure where in the world Kimi was posting from and so didn't know if I might be dealing with an international product or indeed a multinational chain store which might have made finding the product listings on their site more difficult. :)

I would also point out, with all due respect, yes Google is fully accessible in the UK as (as far as I know) we have no major censorship on internet usage as does say, China, for example. That being said, I'm sure there must be other people like me who are part of a low income household and I'm sure this holds true for both the UK and the US. Now, I am fortunate in so far as, in order to aid in jobsearching and the like, we have prioritised reliable internet as a necessity. Others who are worse off than us, both in the UK and the US, may well have sporadic or indeed negligible access to the internet. You are of course quite right, I could have used Google but had a brainfreeze moment. However, you didn't know my situation prior to my putting up this post so in actual fact I do feel that was a little rude, but I don't want to cause conflict.

Thank you very much for the links. :)

Once again, I'm sorry if I offended you. My answer was meant to be humorous and not insulting, hence the added smileys and I thought the uk folks have a sense of humor.

I certainly would not have posted this to someone in China.

And come on it's Friday afternoon after all.

My sincere apologies and I really mean it.

Thank you for the apology. :)

My own apologies, I'm feeling a little run down at the moment and that plus being on the autistic spectrum means that sometimes I can take things literally, i.e. without understanding the irony/sarcasm implicit, especially as tone can be difficult to convey online. :)

For shaving full body i would lather up Tesco Raspberry And Pomegranate Conditioner 500Ml cheap at £0.80 a bottle, smells yummy and above all for me pink!!!!

Now I use a TrueSmooth by BaByliss Battery Lady Shaver. 395/7545 from Argos. Battery powered but pink. Rechargeable option in purple but yuck.

Quicker but not as close as a wet shave. Ingrowns made me spotty so electric good enough until laser finished.

Eek battery 1% posting now.

Shave in the shower at the end after your face has soaked in hot water and soap for a few minutes.  You get a really close shave with zero irritation.  I do it with regular soap and a Gillette Fusion Power Razor.  It works well for anywhere on the body.

@Deborah: Thanks, good tip. :)

@Jerrica: Thanks, Argos hadn't occurred to me will have to try it. :) And wow that conditioner sounds nice. :) On a not unrelated note, I hear that laser feels like having elastic bands fired at your face. As someone with a low tolerance for stingy type pain and sensitive skin, recommended or not so much? :D :)

Rebecca

Been told I have quite a strong tolerance for the laser and he uses it on a higher setting. Recently I've been able to feel nothing or nice warmness to a nasty but tolerable nip. Looks like the experience will be one of those YMMV things but for the wife and I we can handle it easy enough and love our laser sessions. Back tomorrow for top lip only Yay.

Bizarrely my most sensitive spot is my right underarm but he continued at my request using the same settings knowing I'll tell him if it becomes too much for me.

Really lucky to have him but he is in Glasgow so no idea if of use to you.

Skin wise I'm pretty sensitive with light skin and most body hair or at least what little I started with was dark. Sounds like I started with a lot less than most that and the XXY chat has even got me wondering as the sites sound like my life story. Going to ask for blood test on Thursday not that it will change anything but would be nice to know either way.

Back to laser he always finishes off my face and delicates with aloe and any redness tends to fade pretty quick. Less than a few hours but you can feel the dryness in your skin until the next morning.

As for topics if I can be of any use feel free to ask me anything anywhere. You'll probably have noticed I tend to stray a bit myself during chat.

Ok, that's cool. :)

And interesting/good to know it's bearable. :)

I'm down in Suffolk are you up in Scotland then? :)
  •

Rebecca

Yup up in Glasgow, Scotland not quite sure where Suffolk is without looking it up but it is down south so defo too far for Metro.

You should get a patch test maybe even free to get a taste of it. Fair warning though it is kinda fun and just want more.

Unfortunately for me I have always had sparse growth, ok that part is great but a good bit of my facial hair has always been white and wiry so expect to be onto electrolysis after this visit cause the dark in my face is almost all gone. Did face for a few months before I worked up the nerve to ask about the rest of me. He didn't bat an eyelid and was so cool I told him I was trans and he took it as the best news ever ☺

Since then I've been getting everything except head and eyebrows. Time lost but on the right track now.

Still got ages left on body though. Start as soon as you can afford it as it does take a long time to get to the end.

Artemisia

As far as I'm aware I literally just need my face and neck doing as I barely grow any hair on my chest. :) Even then, my facial is quite fine and grows quite slowly, but definitely worth looking into. :)

step one buy a men's 5 blade razor, the more blades the better. Do your best to use fresh razors.

step 2 put a mirror in shower

step 3 take a hot shower and at the end of your shower (pores are open) this part is crucial! exfoliate first then shave against the grain with shaving cream or hair conditioner, works the same. After you're done shaving, exfoliate again.

Step 4 use an alcohol free moisturizer

*notes properly exfoliating removes and erases the chances of developing razor burn/ingrown hairs.

Hi,

I shave my legs in the shower and use coconut oil. It is solid at room temperature and very inexpensive; located in the cooking isle.

Recently I have had to shave 10 days prior to a genital hair clearing. I use coconut oil there too. I find it helps a lot. It also helps for the 10 or so days after the genital clearing when there are scabs and very sensitive skin.
