OXFORD, Ala. (AP) — The city of Oxford, Alabama, has passed an ordinance making it illegal to use a public restroom different from the gender on a person's birth certificate.

Council President Steven Waits tells local news outlets the ordinance passed Tuesday came in response to Target's new restroom and changing room policies. Target announced the policies last week, which allow transgender employees and shoppers to use the restroom that matches their gender identity.

Alabama city: Use bathrooms matching biological sex or face 6 months in jail

By Holly Yan, CNN

Transgender people in Oxford, Alabama, could now face six months in jail for using restrooms labeled for the gender with which they identify.

I can't imagine that's constitutional, but it won't get tested until someone is caught. I wonder if there is a Rosa Parks among the Alabama trans community.

So women will be cool with a transman in the same restroom?

So women will be cool with a transman in the same restroom?

My reading of this situation is that they really don't know much about trans men at all (or trans women). They imagine that we are so rare that whatever problems we cause or (they cause for us) don't matter. They figure that trans women exist in distant evil places but that policies that we've inspired (e.g. the one at Target) are going to bring trouble to their small town.

So the short answer to your questions is, no they're not but they are not knowledgeable enough to know that it could be a problem.

Thank you to Mara Keisling, representatives from the Southern Poverty Law Center, HRC, SONG and the ACLU of Alabama for being at this meeting, representing transgender people.  Points were brought up regarding Title VII and Title IX and this was discussed by the board members.  It was enough to convince three of the five city council members to recall the ordinance.
