I have enabled topic ratings for the News area. Should we allow topics in other specific areas to be rated. If so which areas, and why?

Meh, I think we have enough with the rep system for the rest of the board.

I was thinking about this last night after you got off the chat Susan, I don't think we should do the ratings system on other parts of the site. I think that sometimes each person's opinion of what is valuable can have a tendency to influence other people's opniions of what they read and don't read and I think we should keep that to the News. I am really looking forward to seeing how this rating thing will work :) Meghan

Hum,

I sort of agree with the other's on this point...but...also...at the same time it might not be a bad idea; sometimes there are some great threads out there that have some really good information in them...but with all the posts on the system they can be difficult to find at times...so I find myself torn...so I have to vote for maybe? (My opinion could also change on this at any moment...hey...it's my right!)

Peace and love,

I really am in two minds. I have been on forums where threads were 'rated' and there did seem to be hurt feelings. And I do see Izzy's point about knowing where to find a thread that others have found helpful. I also agree with Meghan that sometimes, given my own inclinations toward laziness, that I might miss something that would be very good simply because it hasn't been rated or has been rated down due to something other than what it contains.

Dennis makes an excellent point as well about ratings in general.

Yeek! I am in three or four minds!!! I don't know. Usually a thread that gets a lot of 'hits' has something worth reading, if only to disagree with it. So, I think that a lot of threads get 'rated' that way. Although i have also read some very good threads that get no, or little response.

Ummmm. I don't know.

Rating the news stories is a good idea.  Rating the how to threads too.  The threads that contain personal experience and opinion, however, should be exempt imo.  How does one rate someone else's opinion or personal life?

Fact based threads can be objectively rated, the others can't, if ya ask me.
