Dan Savage Takes On Ann Coulter Over Transgender Bathroom Rights

The Huffington Post/By Hilary Hanson 05/08/2016

"We've been over why so-called bathroom bills — legislation that prevents transgender people from using the bathroom corresponding with their gender identity — are totally idiotic.

But in case you forgot, here's writer and activist Dan Savage laying the smackdown on Ann Coulter for her logic-free argument against trans rights."

I'm sorry, I can't get into celebrating this.

The only appropriate answer to someone who starts there argument, "once you say men can go into women's bathrooms..." is "TRANS WOMEN AREN'T MEN."

Any other answer, including the one Mr. Savage gave is not a slapdown, it is a backhand against transgender people's identities.

The fact that he doesn't challenge Coulter's characterization of these laws is almost as offensive as Coulter's comments themselves.
Have you read my short story The Eve of Triumph?

I've never been a fan of Savage. He's tepid on a lot of issues and I've never heard him give transgender people his ringing support.

I sort of liked his statement "it is total bull**it." I can't disagree with that.

Like him or not, he stepped forward in the moment and said what needed to be said.  It may not be perfect, but I'm glad he did what he did.  Several million people watch Bill Maher and he put Ann Coulter back in her cage.
