Can't post this in the youth board, putting it here.
For guys who are post operation for bottom surgery, is it what you expected & also does it feel 'right'?
I dislike what is downstairs for me and would much rather have male genitalia, which obviously isn't something I can openly talk about with many people besides psychologist/doctor. On another note, how long until you can have it? Does it take a few years to save up, what average age do men get this surgery

Hi there,

We don't have a lot of post-bottom surgery guys on the board, but I'm in some other support groups for people having bottom surgery so I can speak generally about those experiences.

It seems like once everything is settled (completely post final stages, no lingering complications), people are happy with what they've got. It tends to be the complications that get people down, but once those are cleared up, it seems like guys feel pretty great.

As far as how long, in the US the requirement is one year on T/one year real-life experience (so living as male) to be eligible. The majority of guys are getting it covered with insurance now as opposed to paying out of pocket, at least in the US. Speaking personally, I'll have been medically transitioning for about a year and a half by the time I have phalloplasty. My cost with insurance is $6k for a hysterectomy, vaginectomy, and phalloplasty with all the extras (urethral lengthening, scrotoplasty, glansplasty). It will be up to another $6k at a second stage to have an erectile device and testicular implants placed.

I'm 26. I can't really give you an average age, because it really is all over the place. Guys are getting stuff done much earlier now, but older guys are also getting access to trans-inclusive insurance for the first time, so I don't think there is an average.

I am pre-op bottom surgery but am planning an ALT phallo with Crane asap. I give you my word I'll be posting on these forums afterward to share the experience.

Max, may I ask what insurance you have? I have Highmark, and they cover 40k lifetime with a 2k down payment. I'm assuming I'll be paying 20-40k out of pocket. I've never heard of anyone paying 6k for a phallo, that just seems incredible!

Msg me if you want to Skype! I'm always down to talk, lend an ear or exchange resources.

I've got Carefirst BCBS through the DC health insurance marketplace. No lifetime maximums on mine fortunately. Just up to my out of pocket maximum every year. It's unfortunate - my hysterectomy took up the majority of my expenditures for the year, but they couldn't schedule my phallo until after my annual premium rolled over. I'm still undecided about any kind of implants (and won't decide until after stage 1), but I'm willing to bet that whatever date I get for that would also fall after my premium rolls over again, so total cost would be closer to $12k will all the bells and whistles. Still not that bad compared to what guys had been paying out of pocket years ago. Doesn't include any of my travel expenses, but I can't nail those down until they give me a specific date.

If you let your surgeon know that you have a lifetime max on your plan, they may figure out a way to save you money. Is the lifetime max just for gender related surgery? If so, call them up and ask what exactly is included in that figure. That may be the most they'll pay a surgeon for it, but it may not include your hospital expenses. So you may be able to negotiate with the surgeon as long as they aren't trying to split $40k with the hospital. If that makes sense.

I got meta in March, and I can't even tell you the difference.  I think/hope the bottom dysphoria will be completely gone after I get my testicular implants in December (?).  I do think that if I didn't have UL and vaginectomy, my dysphoria would have continued (especially the UL).  My point is, a simple meta wouldn't have worked, nor would a simple + scrotum have been enough.  So, I don't know what you are planning, but if you aren't for sure, start with the simple and then add from there in your head.

I used my insurance, so only had a 2K copay along with travel cost and housing (add about $5,500).  I have to pay for my implants out of pocket though, because I had a maximum on my trans health care insurance.

You have to be on testosterone for one year in order to get it, assuming your surgeon follows WPATH standards.
