In the strategic picture it helps us maintain influence and retain a favorable balance of power.  Sometimes politicians screw up and it doesn't work.

Love is not obedience, conformity, or submission. It is a counterfeit love that is contingent upon authority, punishment, or reward. True love is respect and admiration, compassion and kindness, freely given by a healthy, unafraid human being....  - Dan Barker

Yeah foreign aid is about influence peddling and one can argue a lot better morally and more effective than having our military flexing its muscles around the planet. But yep politicians do screw it up.

People in general overestimate non-military spending and underestimate military spending. It is obscene how much we spend on that. Does it make us or the world any safer? Very very debatable. Live by the sword, die by the sword.
