The FBI is looking into the possibility that Omar Mateen visited Pulse nightclub and tried to communicate with some of its patrons on a gay dating app before he gunned down 49 people there, authorities told NBC News.

Cord Cedeno, a customer at the Orlando club, told MSNBC on Monday that Mateen tried to get in contact with him through Grindr, a dating application for gay and bisexual men — but that he blocked Mateen "because he was creepy."

Cedeno said that after Mateen killed 49 people and wounded 53 others at Pulse early Sunday, "I recognized him off Grindr." Mateen, 29, was killed in a shootout with police after a three-hour standoff.

"That's not his first time there," Cedeno said. "He's been there several times. I know that for a fact."

Could be a case of someone so disgusted with his own sexual orientation that it drove him crazy.

It could be that or it could be reconnaissance if he was planning for a long time.

If it was disgust then it was religion, once again, that implanted that disgust in the first place.  Being taught and believing to your very core that you are an abomination to God will either drive one to despair or alternatively to acts such as this in an effort to prove one's self to God.

Not necessarily. There are powerful cultural roots of homophobia that don't necessarily have to do with religion. Not every homophobe is religious.

I disagree.  While all are not religious it is the religious books that have shaped the mores of every country with an Abrahamic religion for over 1400 years.

And besides, his father's statement that "God will punish homosexuals" is a pretty strong hint as to how he was raised.
