I came out to my wife today.  It was by far the hardest thing I have ever done.  It felt like jumping out of a plane without a parachute.  Thankfully, she was my parachute: she is understanding and supportive, if a little puzzled.

I am starting to plan where to go from here.  I have a neighbour who works with LGBT youth.  I am going to see if she can point me in the direction of a good gender therapist.  (My email to her: "I know you work with LGBT youth.  Well, I am not a youth, and I am not G or B..." :)

I am totally open about where to go from there.  Whether and to what extent to transition will depend on what the therapist and I come up with.

** Huge sigh of relief!  **

Congratulations Kathy! Telling a spouse or partner is probably one of the hardest steps we can take in our journey to realise and express our true gender identity. It's great that she took it so well, just be aware that sometimes initial support can become a bit wobbly as the enormity of the news sinks in and she starts to contemplate what it all means for her. Just keep the lines of communication open and honest.

Hi Kathy,

That is great news, sweetie. I can't even imagine what it's like to have that kind of support.  You are a very lucky girl!

I noticed you are from Nova Scotia.  I have never been, but I have seen pictures.  What a lovely area. One of my first male admirers was from Nova Scotia. He was so sweet to me. He really got me thinking about men as a love interest. I guess you are going to be a lesbian, yes? Whatever your sexual intents, hang on to love.  That is the most important thing. The rest will work itself out. :)

With kindness,

Terri

Congrats Kathy, it's so wonderful that your wife is trying to understand.

Thanks, ladies.

My wife said she would support whatever I decided to do.   I have no illusions about what "support" means.  It might mean that, if she decides to leave me, she would still want to be friends.

All I can do is hope for the best and go forward from here.

Congrats Kathy. I'm glad to hear that your wife is supportive of you.  :)

From my experience telling my partner (and father of my kids) has been the hardest thing for me to do.
