Hey, guys!

I'm finally moving forward with my physical transition and I start T on Wednesday.

But I'm at a loss of where to get an appropriate hair cut here in Los Angeles. I'm hoping since LA is one of the most major cities in America, maybe a few people here could point me in the right direction.

Ideally, of course, I'd like to go to a place that is familiar with TRANS issues and won't just give me a hair cut that will make me look like a butch lesbian. However, I'd settle for finding a salon that is LGBT friendly at least and won't look at me like I'm crazy when I walk in and say I'm transitioning to male and want *shows picture of male* that type of cut.

I had someone in Orange county but I moved about 5 years ago. If you haven't selected a cut, you might try this site.

I live in Northern Cali so I unfortunately can't help with a location. But for me when I was Pre-T I would frequently have hair dressers try to give me a 'cute' short hair cut. I was just firm and direct (not rude). I had one hair dresser tell me "Oh you don't want that haircut.. that's a man's haircut".. I told her "Perfect! Cuz that's exactly what I want to look like. A big lumber jack man."  I mainly went to Sports Clips (til I finally trusted my sister-in-law when my beloved beard started to connect). I always got a fade in those days and loved it but now I wear it a little longer.

Getting a haircut when transitioning to male should be rather easy.  Just go to any male barbershop and they should be able to give you an appropriate haircut.  There shouldn't be any question about serving you. I have seen women getting haircuts in traditional male barbershops without any problem.

I think what they're getting at is they don't feel confident that they pass enough to go to a male barbershop and get a male haircut. I think they're afraid the barber is going to see them as a woman and give them a butch lesbian version of the haircut if that makes any sense.

As far as LGBT friendly stylists, I tried to do a google search and could only find specifics like "best lesbian/best gay salons" Idk if that means they are LGBT friendly or if the salons are run by the best gay/lesbian hair stylists. But if it's the latter I'm sure they'd be LGBT friendly.

I just moved to LA in June but since I have a beard and pass 100% of the time I can just walk into a shop and let em go at it and come out looking just fine. It was hard for me being pre-testosterone in Colorado trying to find a place that when I said "Cut it short like a boy" they wouldn't give me a pixie cut.

So with a little more digging, I found this place called Folklore Salon. On the site itself, it says "For Dames, Gents, and Folks in Between" and all of the stylists appear to be queer. There is even one that I believe is somewhere on the trans spectrum because they said "I'm a Southern California girl/boi".

So I'm gonna give this place a shot this week, unless I get any different recs here!

I'll let you guys know how it goes, post pics, etc. If I'm satisfied with the cut, then I'll recommend it to others that may be looking for the same thing in LA.

I was raised by a single father and male barbers never blinked an eye at cutting my hair in the middle of nowhere North Dakota, Kentucky and in California. I would advise anyone to just walk in and ask for whatever length they want. Those old barbers are pretty cool.

But, I get the fear. When I lived in San Pedro, close to LA, I went to an old Mexican woman and told her I wanted short hair like a boy. She had no problem doing it. Most hair places will do what you want if you ask very specifically.

It depends on the hairdresser. If you come in looking too much like a girl they will try to give you the haircut they want, not what you want. That's my experience. I am very loyal to my hairdresser now. She's always done what I asked for, but makes it look good, too. I haven't always requested the best cuts, either. I'm on a new one now and we both like it.

Okay, guys, I went to Folklore Salon yesterday and I had an awesome woman named Joyce do my hair. She was 100% supportive and wanted to make sure I looked sharp and dapper rather than beautiful.

This is how it turned out. Tell me what you guys think. (Ignore the kissy face, I was sending this to my girlfriend originally. )
