Hi everyone,

I'm applying to a couple of uk universities (for undergrad law degrees) this year, just wondering if anyone has any tips on navigating the application process as a trans person. I will be applying using my birth name and gender as I have yet to legally change these. Basically, should I explain the situation when I apply or just wait and give them the details when/if I get my place? I'll have a few interviews and tests to go to before I get an offer, but I can pass fine as cis-female for these since I'm pre-T. I just don't want do anything that might disadvantage me, which I think might include emphasising my trans status.

Heya Objection (is that a Phoenix Wright reference btw? :3) Legally your trans status shouldn't affect their decisions in any way, but I'd recommend not telling them about yourself until you plan to begin transition, as even if you do inform them, the administration won't do anything about it until you go through legal processes or ask them for support

Well i had to do all these funny things back in 2012.

Heres my advice dont tell anyone. You may ask why but if a degree has an interview why risk a possible bias. Get into what you want then let people know.

Interms of admin I entered as male then changed my legal gender a few years later and had my university change my gender on their records to prevent issues once I graduate.

As I got into a very special degree of 15 students compared to the average 500 per year, I initially thought to use my trans status however look at it from the course coordinators point of view either they are anti trans or they think you want pity or they are pro trans and therefore give you no special treatment meaning the risk holds no true reward.

Many on this site believe you should always be proud but we live in a bigotted world and so it is safer to present cis then let them know once their bias plays no part.

Also consider what degree you are going to do for instance i am doing engineering and 85% of the students are male and generally speaking aholes so had I been out all the mandatory group work would of been hell as I personally dont pass.

One last thing your student card. Mine has a gender marker on it and once I legally went female but I look male, so examiners have pulled me out thinking I was there to write for someone else haha. I am fater with long hair and I dont match my photo. Not super fat but when i entered uni I was like 0% fat and now i have fat in my face.

Not all uni do this but when its a well known institute they will take more security steps to stop cheating.
