So I got my hair cut this afternoon and I'm freaking out. Hair is emotional, huh? Had mid-back long hair and the barber cut it shorter than I asked. No product, nothing. I usually wear my hair straight, so to see all these short curls is a shock. My Mom saw it today and she liked it. I feel a bit traumatised, wondering if I should have gone to a stylist, or if it is because I'm just not used to it. I worked myself up to this after a few weeks thinking about it before deciding to do it, and in fifteen minutes or so it was chopped off. Very fast. I wore my hair the same way for the last ten years, so this is a big change. Right now looking in the mirror I have no idea who I am looking at, and not in a good way.

ETA: Feeling a bit calmer now that I'm home and had a chance to stare at myself in the mirror for a while. Progress.

Yeah takes some time getting used too. I think with most ftms the first foray into a mans haircut doesn't go particularly well as we don't choose the best hairstyle; we're just glad we look somewhat like ourselves. With more confidence we getter better at choicing. Btw; it sounds like your barber is useless at his job. He should of  listened to his client (basic rule of hairdressing or barbering), to cut it short enough to make your hair go curly doesn't sound intentional (a barber should know how to work with different hair types) and all hairdressers/barbers use product for their clients; it's especially important if you have curly hair in order to give some control and definition to your hair. Plus a good barbershop should be proud of the products he sells and want to get people to buy them. I wouldn't give up on barbershops yet; to me you can't beat the experience. Some barbershops are stuck in the past; but more now are springing up which are a lot more modern; where they cater to cut more different styles instead of the traditionalal cuts, where the barbers listen to the client and where they'll happily advertise a hair product because they know it'll make you look even better.

Btw, I hope you do like your new look though :).
They/them pronouns preferred.

until very recently i've always just cut my own hair myself so that i could be in control and my mother would help me with the back. the shorter it is, the easier it is to manage and cut yourself anyway; maybe you could do this for the time being whenever you need another?

I do love DIY, lol. I used to cut my fringe all the time, we'll see what happens here if I end up doing more of the same here. But for the next month or maybe two, I'll let it grow a bit and see how it settles on me.

Ah, cheers for your tips and info on barbers, good to know! I have no idea. I'm more used to the hair today, but still a shock after a lifetime of long hair for the most part. And in the past I've gone to experienced stylists to deal with my hair. I've also mostly worn it straight. I did explain that last bit to the barber, but he went to town with the water spray bottle and cut it wet and curly. By comparison, the stylists usually wash/dry hair my hair before cutting to see where it falls when long.

I did take photos of styles I was after, explained I wanted a bit longer like in the photos to help weigh the wave/curl down a bit, even showed him on my hair the length of the fringe I was happy with to have much of it that length, but he went ahead and did mostly his own thing. So at the back at the top it's maybe an inch long, where I was aiming for at least three inches. I wanted longer than the standard men's cuts, and a little less worried about passing ATM since the hair for me is a dramatic change - mentally, that's toughest for me so far (more than the thought of name changes, T, etc) . Anyway, will see what it's like in another month or two. And I'll either find one of these modern barber shops or back to a stylist.

I'll see if I can take a reasonable photo today and post here.

I had pretty long hair as well (not quite as long as you, but probably the longest it's been since I started my transition) and I got it all buzzed at the beginning of the summer. I've never had a buzz cut before either, so it was a huge adjustment. To be honest, for the first few days I wasn't a huge fan. But as time went by and I got more used to it it started to really grow onto me (no pun intended). Getting a dramatic hair cut is always gonna be shocking at first, even if you were expecting it. If some time passes and you still don't like it, at least now you know not to go to that hairdresser again.

I'm impressed. My worst fear was a buzz cut, ha. Yeah, it's big change for me so it's gonna take some getting used to, even if I loved the cut.

Alright, so today I straightened my hair a little rather than the weird slicked back curls thing going on yesterday. That reminded me way too much of my hated haircut 20 years ago when it was all about an inch long. This is a bit better today, still trying to get used to it...not in love with the fact that the hair got a feathered/razor/shaver cut... generally not done with curls because of the frizz factor.

Here's a pic today. Yesterday's pics are too alarming to share, heh. I know there's supposed be a thing about wearing plaid shirts, but this is what I've got on today...

Cheers! I'm definitely liking it more today as I'm getting used to it. Still a shock every time I reach to touch my hair, lol.

I am doing the opposite, waiting, impatiently, for my hair to grow out! Pixie cut, here I come. The waiting is an unexpected ordeal.

:)

I'm waiting for my hair to grow out some on top, but I may trim the back before then, we'll see. Even the barber told me a pixie cut would be great for me, lol. *shakes head*

And still not entirely used to the short hair. It's definitely a mental adjustment. Overall, glad I cut it, but not quite the style I was going for. And seeing my feminine-ish face with the short hair startles me every time I look in the mirror.
