Someone who works with me said some transphobic things to me on social media. I screenshot, printed it out and reported it to the admin. Did I do the right thing? I feel like since it didn't happen at work they won't do anything.

Even if it comes to nothing now, if there is an incident later at work you might be glad this incident was recorded. I think you did the right thing.

Most companies have a Social Media policy - have a look at your handbook. It'll probably say that all staff must ensure any comments made in public fora (including social media) are in keeping with company policies and must not bring the business into disrepute.

If you only know this person through work, then any discussions between the two of you can be considered work-related. But even if you don't, your bosses need to know that this person is bullying you because those comments have poisoned your working relationship and they may carry on bullying you at work too.

So of course you did the right thing.

Your company most likely has a social media policy.

It's like school — the kids could get in trouble at school for bullying/harassing another student online even if these incidents don't take place on the school property.

I'd say you did the right thing.

Even if they do nothing, it's still been documented so in the future if they do something at work, it won't be considered the first time they've said/done something like this.

Remember, always (this coming from a former corporate Exec), the HR department doesn't exist to protect you, but for the safety of the company. It is awesome you stepped up, and you should, but do not dwell on this event whatsoever, or they may find that you may be a potential problem and find a way to release you sometime in the future. Do not dwell on this event, it is reported and officially scrutinized, obviously if it happens again there must be action.

But do not dwell on it just because some azzbag did a hateful thing. At these times we must be strong.

I work for a major retail pharmacy and our training says social media harassment still creates a hostel work environment and should be reported. You did the right thing by reporting them!

Speaking from the view of a professional Business Consultant, you should file a report with HR any time someone says or does something that gives you solid evidence that your work environment will become disruptively hostile.  They want to know if they're putting a Transgender employee with a Transphobic one, because they'd rather give him a stern talking to about how the company feels right now than have to deal with anything more than that later.

If it's clearly inflammatory behavior, always report it.
