I'm a music major and have no shoes formal enough to perform in. I can't do children's shoes as it's obvious that they are of lower quality (look at the seams, soles) and are always in patterns that are too casual.
I'm very particular about how I look when I dress for formal events so I'm willing to spend some money on a pair, but I am a student so I can't go overboard.

Can anyone help me out? I've been looking for months with no luck. The smallest I can usually find is a 5.

Best bet is amazon. A size 4 is pretty hard to come by tho. I have a hard enough time trying to find a 6 or a 6.5

You might have to get a pair of custom fit shoes. Or look to high end boys shoes (the kind geared to wedding parties or performance wear).
I'm sorry I don't have better advice. I don't dress formally or wear that size.

Even looking at high end boys shoes, there's a noticeable difference in quality. I haven't been able to find any that I consider suitable for any sort of solo or small group (trio, quartet) performances.
Custom fit might be a necessity at this point. :/

Have you seen the selection? It's awful. :(

Eh, most dress shoes tend to look the same to me unless you start getting into the really expensive stuff.
But yeah, if you're not just looking for a general humdrum style, I'd say you'll have to go custom.

It looks like that site offers a relatively decent range of customizable style/color options and it allows you to enter the exact length and width of your feet for the most accurate sizing.

I've seen US size 4 in Doc Martens.

The boys' section can be hit or miss, I agree.

Did you check out Zappos? They have some nicer stuff in a range of sizes (especially the Florsheims):

Also, maybe try checking out European shops online / shoe brands. They tend to have more selection of formal shoes for kids. One brand to look for is Step2wo, also carried by Selfridges:

There are some good mail-order companies based in Asia that do small men's shoes in a whole load of styles. Also some shops that rent boys' formalwear have pretty good shoe ranges. I'm a size 4 1/2 (usually wear a 4 or 5) and have got good formal shoes from both of these.
Don't dream it, be it.
