I completed a bachelor's and master's degree before transitioning. As recently as last year I was told by both universities that I cannot have my degree reprinted with a new name. The caveat is I did not at the time give the reason for wanting to change my degree. Does anyone have any experience with this?

Do you want it reprinted on the degree itself? Like to display somewhere?

I don't have experience with that. I had no issues getting my name updated on the records and transcripts for my diploma, bachelor's, and master's. Most schools have a form you can fill out for this. Mine needed the form, a copy of my updated identification, a copy of the court order for my name change, and the form had to be notarized. No added costs or anything. Both my bachelor's and master's schools even printed out two official transcripts for me for free with the name updated in case I needed it ASAP.

According to both of my school's websites, I'm able to order a replacement degree with my updated name on it as long as I have updated my name on all of their student records through the registrar. I'm happy to post links to those if you would like to see the verbiage and see if there's anything similar at your schools. It seems strange to me that both of yours said no.

My school is just putting in place a process for transgender graduates to do this - of course, the name change has to be legal first.

I had no problem changing my records at the Univ. of Michigan (large public school) years after graduating.  I did not get a new diploma certificate printed as part of this, but I could have, for a fee, by filling out a form.

How does your school handle it if someone graduates, and changes their name due to marriage? Are they SOL?

You would think that most schools would be helpful in changing your diploma, outside of maybe Oral Roberts Univ.

That sounds really frustrating and worth following up on with the university. I'm sure people have approached them before with wanting documents reissued to match new legal names. Please let us know how it goes.

I haven't transitioned officially yet, but have had this issue on my mind, since I'll need to contact different colleges and universities to get new transcripts and certificates when i do my legal name change... from two different provinces in Canada and also in the UK.

I will be following up next week and I'll be sure to report back.

You wouldn't normally change your name on school records because you got married.

With that said, I don't even know where my diplomas are. I usually just send transcripts when requested. They're not that important.
