Hairline options?

I like my hair, but it is moderately receded and fine. It's one of those things that I don't see as a problem in the mirror, but all the pictures of me look horrifying.
I'd rather not go with a wig, right now. I might at some point. I've thought about hairscarves or adding a fedora or something like it to my usual fashion. I'm not sure how well those would work. I always feel a little odd about adding things to my style that I don't see any women around me wearing. Any thoughts?

I wear a hat. Maybe that would help you?

I'm glad I found this. I'm more in the know when it comes to the bio area (not so much fashion), but if you wanna take that route, I think you will be fine too. If you choose to go for your natural hair there are a few things you can do. Hair transplants seem pretty popular and are highly effective. They can be expensive though.

At present I'm about 2 years in on E and finasteride and when they're coupled with a blocker, I'm able to start filling back in the M shape on my head. I am also using minoxidil to help speed the process up. Although one side of the M is filling in a bit faster, the progress is impressive to say the least. The parts of my head that are supposed to have hair have since filled in with peach fuzz, and towards the top of my hairline that fuzz has grown very long and has started to turn brown. I know they say that minoxidil only works for thinning on the crown, but I don't think they did their studies with someone on Estrogen, blockers, a a DHT blocker. This is actually going so well I might not need to get a scalp advancement. It is time consuming though. I would say it has been happening since month 14 on HRT and using minoxidil on and off, and I still have another year or 2 to go before my hairline is corrected.
Trying to take it one day at a time :)

I am trying Minoxidil, but only for a couple of months.
Still, I can already see some little hair beginning to grow on the area.

Warning: I can also see some hair beginning to grow on nearby areas in the face. But waxing them is working fine. :)

If you are not looking into scalp advancement.... You can try hair tattoo but be sure you go to a good one or you'll regret it and for less commitment u can try scalp make up powder, it stays untill your next shower... Good to hide thinning hair.... U can also add biotin or viviscal to your supplements....Hope it helps a little :)

This is one of my biggest hurdles to transition. I know I won't pass without getting my hairline fixed. Mine has only receded a moderate amount, but it's still very noticeable and what's left between the M is very thin so I can't just hide it with a 'strategic parting'.

I'm hoping for a miracle with HRT, but I worry that it might be too late. I'm 29, but I noticed the hair loss start when I was 14, so I'm not sure if the follicles could be reactivated.

I've heard minoxidil can actually worsen balding in the hairline and should only be used on the crown. But then I've also heard that it can do wonders in the front. I'm dying to figure out a way to get that regrowth back, every time I see someone with a nice hairline it makes me a little sad now. I've had long hair for most of my life, I just wish I could do something cute with it. But the hairline keeps getting in the way :/

I'll be following this thread with great interest. Anyone have any before/after pictures of what HRT has done for their hairline? I could use some hope <3

I have a male friend who also was losing his hair since very young. His "m" was a BIG upper case M.
Minoxidil really helped him and today we can't say he had any loss of hair.

Lots of men use it also to help the growth of beard. The only thing I see people mentioning to avoid is to use it close to the eyes.

If I were you I'd try it. If it doesn't work, well it doesn't and you can think of maybe another option.
And if it works.... yeaaaah! Way to go, girl!! :D

That's very encouraging! I remember experimenting with minoxidil when I was a teenager, right after I noticed it receding. For some reason I stopped.

Maybe I'll pick it up again :)

avoid is to use it close to the eyes.
Of course, who wants hairy eyes.  ;D

I've already had some bald temple spots grow back just from HRT, but my hairline is still pretty high.
My question is, for my hairline, do I need to use Minoxidil forever like for thinning hair or will the hair stay once it restarts growing?

LOL... There are some people that use it to grow eyelashes (myself included :embarrassed:) but IT IS NOT RECOMMENDED at all!

I believe that the answer to your question would depend on your organism. There is a chance that once grown, it will stay normal and do not fall again. I guess it could happen specially if you take hormones.

But this is just my opinion, I'd recommend you to talk to your doctor before starting it to be sure of its effects on your particular case.  ;)

This is a great topic!  I am currently taking finasteride and I was wondering if that alone will bring back hair,  also if it is effective to add some minoxidil with the finasteride for better results?

I have this problem as well so here is a pretty much comprehensive list of your options.

Non-surgical:

Finnesteride: type 2-alpha reductase inhibitor: Inhibits enzymes that create DHT a androgen correlated with hair loss. This will reduce dht levels by around 70%

Dutasteride: Only available in Korea and Japan legally for hair loss. Used to treat Benign prostate hyperplasia in the united states and other countries. Inhibits Type 1 and type 2 alpha reductase enzymes. Will lower DHT levels by around 90% and has much greater results and greater side effects than finnesteride.

Minoxodil: AKA Rogaine, will grow back some hair and make "vellus"(thin light) hairs thicker.

HRT: The antiandrogens will lower your testosterone and dht levels and can have an effect similiar to dutasteride when used. Early on in your therapy you are likely to have your new hair that grows in fall back out though.

PRP: Platelet rich plasma. They draw out some blood stick it in a centrifuge and seperate the platelet rich plasma from the rest of your red blood cells and plasma. Then it is injected into the scalp. It works because there are about 20 growth factors which speed cell growth in the prp.
There is a lot of research lately supporting this and an effective treatment for hair loss but you are looking at about at least 4 months of treatment 1/month at around 800$ each.

Prp with acell or Prp with ecm: The are both the same thing basically. Its prp with a bunch of stem cells. Typically around $2500 for a treatment and most people only need one treatment and lasts 2-5 years, but possibly more. Its been around since 2011 so its hard to put a hard number on how long it will last especially when you don't have any androgens in your blood tearing down your follicles anymore.

Surgical:

Hairline advancement: surgically advances the heir line by cutting off about an inche of forehead skin the sutureing the skin back together. Typically advances scalp line by around .75-1 inch. Around $3000.

Hair transplant: Takes hairs from the back of the head and transplants to the top of the head. Limited by donor on the back of the head. Results are highly dependent on the skill of the surgeon. Your can only have one hair transplant a year and it takes 6-18 months to regrow in. Some baselines:For 1-2 inches of recession think 2-3k grafts. For first half recessed think 4-5k grafts. For horseshoe you are looking at at least 6k grafts and may still have limited results. Most surgeons cap out at around 3.5k grafts in a single surgery. Hasson and Wong in Vancouver and Natural hair transplants in Florida specialize in mega sessions for 5k+ grafts in a single surgery. Think around 5$ a graft generally.

Future stuff:

Take this with whatever skepticism you like. So 2016 has been like the most amazing year for hair regeneration research in the history of forever.

Super simplified explanation of hair growth. You have stem cells at the bottom of your hair follicle those turn into progenitor cells and those progenitor cells turn into hair cells.

One big thing that happened around june-ish 2016 was University of Philadelphia measured the amount of stem cells and progenitor cells in miniaturized(dead hair follicles) and healthy hair follicles and found that the number of stem cells was the same in the dead vs living follicles, but that the progenitor cells were almost all gone in the dead hair follicles, while normal in living follicles.

The paper I was referring to:
http://www.uphs.upenn.edu/news/News_Releases/2011/01/male-pattern-balding-stem-cell-inactivation/

Future treatments:

Within the next 4 or so years a ton of new treatments will be coming out some of them having the potential to completely cure angrogenic alopecia(Male pattern baldness). The two huge ones are Shiseido and Replicell vs Kyocera and Team Riken lead by Dr. Tsuji.

More about this here:

http://www.hairlosscure2020.com/so-its-shiseidoreplicel-versus-rikentsuji-at-the-kobe-biomedical-innovation-cluster-kbic/

Anyways there are a lot of companies that are targettign releases for their hair regeneration products in 2018-2020. Its honestly too many to name. If I explained them all  it would take 5k words.

Here are some products to look into if you are interested though.

Shiseido/Replicell's stemcell treatment (Target window 2020 for release in Japan)
Kyocera/TeamRiken's stem cell treatment (Target window 2017 for release in Japan)
Histogen (Target window 2018 for release in Mexico)
Follica (Target window 2018 for release)

All release windows have been stated as their are best case scenarios for release.

All of these are already in or working or starting final stage trials for commercialization and have already shown in their previous studies to be much more effective than Minoxodil and Propecia.

Annushka, your names seems Indian. I am an Indian MtF transgender who is still in the closet. How did you convince your parents about the transitioning? How and at what age did you come out of the closet?

Hi, Saira:)
Actually, I'm Spanish/Brazilian. Annushka is a russian short familiar form of my name Anna.

How old are you?
I'm a late bloomer. I was just sure about myself very recently (I'm 35). We may say I'm still "coming out of the closet", as I am still not a girl 24/7. And I hope to start HRT shortly.

About convincing the parents, this is a very delicate subject. It is really hard to have a formula, as each parent use to think and behave different. It is great of you to try to find someone culturally close to India, as there is a chance that your parents could share the same cultural traits.

What, in almost every case, works out is to show them it is all about happiness. If they love you - and normally our parents do love us - they want you to be happy! You'd have to show them that this is your path to happiness (but first you have to be sure about it).

It may also help showing them websites or information material that talks about transgender, to try to break the common idea that a transgender is a freak, a devious or insanity. If they understand you are not crazy, perverted or tormented by the devil, they can understand that this is a conscious decision with deep roots on your true identity.

If you want more help on that, I'd suggest you to create a specific topic about it and we can share some thoughts and discuss it more. Maybe more people can help! What do you think?  ;)

Be happy!!

Thank u Annushka...You have a very beautiful name. Anushka is a very common name in India. What you said definitely helped. I'm just scared of my parents reacting harshly.
I will make a new topic for it.

I'm currently taking Finasteride, and it works very well. The hair specialist also prescribed some other things I'm not too sure about, though I suspect saw palmetto is in there, and also a small dose of Spiro to negate the small increase in T that finasteride causes. It has definitely caused (temporary?) ED for me; for some people that's an issue, for others, it's a welcome benefit. Good luck on your search!

I heard that taking biotin helps and nourishing the hair itself with things like gelatine? Personally, I had a receding hair line ( and still do lol) enough to be self conscious even before transition since puberty really ripped me apart emotionally and physically and this was big sign of it!  I wore a wig for a few years at first , it was the fastest way to deal with it and in the meantime while looking into possible surgical options. I wore hats and berets ect.. to get away from the wig which was hot and uncomfortable. My mom would say " look , I have thin hair and I see other women with hair loss!" I used hair products to ad volume and parted it so it was less obvious and even though it was still there, my mom was right , when i started looking around me, I did notice that there were many women that had hair loss issues and i didn't see it so much as past male thing i reclaimed it being an problem that many other woman shared!
