I was looking up how to change my gender marker and found out I have to wait until after SRS to do it. North Carolina sucks.

Has anyone have experience dealing with NC?

Alora,

You could do social security name and gender change since it is federal not state. You could change name for driver's license at least even if the state doesn't allow gender change. It does stick I agree.

Indiana is the same way. But the way my doctor worded a "letter of passage" for me, she said I had "undergone medical provisions" or something along those lines, and with my legal name change, they changed my gender marker at the social security office, I took that letter from my doctor and the paperwork from the social security office a few days later to the BMV and they changed my marker on my Drivers License. birth certificate wise tho, that's a whole new battle. Virginia which is my birth state requires paperwork from an actual surgeon verifying grs. But changing your everyday ID's if you play the system right usually turns out good.  Take the steps Moni suggested first and it gives you an edge when fighting the BMV n might help you push the records department in the right direction on a birth cert

North Carolina is a difficult one.  I'd suggest taking up residence in another state if you don't want to wait until after SRS/GRS. I personally don't think it matters much.  Gender Change, while exciting, isn't as important as the Hormones to me.  After recieving hormones, the rest is just icing on the cake.

I'm currently in Washington state. My birth certificate is in North Carolina. I wanted to get a new passport with what will be my new name and I also wanted the appropriate gender marker.

I would do the paperwork in Washington state. Change your driver's license and work from there. Washington state is pretty easy to get it updated. I just did it 2 months ago.

Agreed, changing you driver's license and gender marker in Washington has been very easy for years.  Once you get that done, you can apply for an updated passport.  I cannot remember if I got the password changed before or after SRS, but I didn't update my birth certificate until last year.  Mainly because I have never needed my bc for anything (passport serves as valid ID for work).  But with these new bathroom bills being introduced, I just did it.  Now I was fortunate to be born in Colorado, so it was relatively painless to update although they required a court order stating I had SRS.  That part was another hoop I had to jump through.

I have friends who have been working tirelessly in NC to get HB2 overturned, and it looks like they are making headway.  I am not saying that it will be possible to get your NC bc updated, but I believe in time you will.
