How long between surgeries?

Like many of us, I expect to go through a number of surgeries as I transition. I was wondering, how long do people usually wait between them? What's the shortest wait time between two bouts of general an anesthesia?

I planned my FFS to be sure I had at least 6 months before SRS. Though I have no control over when SRS happens

Well I am no doctor, but it is my understanding that you should give at least 2 months of recuperation time in between surgeries requiring general anesthesia.

But my advice is to take as much time as your body needs.  Remember transition is not a quick fix, it is a long journey.  I learned more about myself in the three years of my transition from coming out until I had SRS than I learned in the 33 years before.  And still to this day I am growing into the woman I am.

Sorry to derail a little there, I wish you the best of everything.  Enjoy this time, and fulfill your dreams.  :)

I had asked Suporn's office the same question a few weeks ago, specifically regarding FFS and SRS. I was told three months and that they recommended doing FFS first if I was wanting both done quickly, as the recovery for SRS is long and requires sticking to your dilation schedule

If you want to do voice it's probably best to leave that until last to reduce the risk to your vocal cords during intubation for surgery.

My last operation was from 8 months, cellstem, to promote collagen in the skin .
it should be a wait of 6 months.

I was told 6 months for voice surgery but I know others on the site are getting closer spacing. Personally, I would go with 6 months to a year for "elective" surgery. Elective surgery being non emergency surgery.

I needed at least 3 months after facial surgery just to get my energy back.  I had minor revisions two months later (twilight sedation), and then SRS/BAS a little over 3 months after that.  So, 8 months in total between major surgeries.

I actually recuperated much more quickly after SRS -- I was fully active and raring to go barely 2 months after that.

As an aside, I do recommend have facial surgery first, if that's on your plate.  It goes much further in facilitating transition, and the kind of gendering you'll get after it will pretty much confirm whether bottom surgery is the right thing to do or not.  Most aspects of facial surgery can be reversed -- SRS, not so much.
What you look forward to has already come, but you do not recognize it.

Thanks, all. I'm getting to the end of a period of waiting and all of a sudden I want it all to be done Right! Now! And dreading the prospect of this all stretching into my 50s.

I'm definitely having FFS first, though... Probably in two rounds. I haven't been thinking reversal, but it's a good bonus if the worst happens.

I recommend at least 6 months between surgeries.  While you'll technically be ok to have another surgery after just 2 or 3 months, you really don't want to be spending 6 months straight of feeling like crap.

It takes about 2-3 months before you really start to feel like yourself again after a major surgery, and then if you have to go in for another surgery right after that, you're going to be spending so many consecutive months simply recovering that it can really do a number on you mentally and emotionally.  You really want to have some semblance of a normal life for at least a little while between surgeries for your own mental health.

Personally, I would say 6 months to a year. Takes at least 1 year for scars to heal 100%. But I am obsessed with caution. So I waited two years. Just kidding... :D No, after SRS I really needed time to settle... it took me well over 1.5 years to be able to muster courage and strength to go through FFS (emotionally). FFS truly kicked my ...

And I do agree with Mirya, surgery takes a lot out of us... not only physically, but also emotionally. So ask yourself after the 1st surgery: how big is my buffer? both physically and emotionally.

And as Inarasarah said: take as long as your body needs.

Before SRS I went on a diet, and lost 25 pounds of weight. I quit smoking and drinking. I also did cardio, so that I could take the surgery regarding cardio health and stamina. Because it's all down to stamina. It's exhausting, and it can get to you. So be your best.

I will wait like some months to do my ffs again,

so it will be a one year wait.

I didn't really plan it this way but I spread them out. I think I ended up focusing on a surgery and then healed from it and then started realizing I wanted something else so then I went for that one, rinse repeat.

March 2011 : SRS + Trach Shave (I did them at the same time)
August 2012 : Unexpected Toe surgery (loose cartilage removal)
Sep 2012 : BA
Jan 2014 : Hair transplants (FUT)
April 2015 : Unexpected Hand surgery (cyst removal)
Nov 2016: FFS (Forehead + Nose)
