I just had my voice surgery done along with a bunch of other procedures. Today is my 2nd day post op. Yesterday I could barely talk at all and when I did it was really squeeky. Today I can whisper louder but I hear no difference in my voice when I whisper. However, if I try to talk loud it squeaks a bunch. I can't talk at normal voice that much because it hurts.

My doctor told me the squeaky stuff is a good sign, then it will become raspy, then start to level off into a female range.

My question is, when I whisper my voice sounds the way it used to sound? Is that bad? I was told 1/10 people it doesn't work but he did adam's apple shave for free since I let him use my pictures for his website, so if it doesn't work it's not like I'm out a ton of money either.

Anyone else had this experience?

You had a surgery that I am not sure anybody is familiar with. Mostly we have VFS and that requires no talking for 1-4 weeks after surgery. In any case, pain after voice surgery is likely and you should talk with your doctor about it. We had a cough medicine but I suspect with the type of surgery you had, you may need some other form of medication.

You might mention your doctor and/or where you had your surgery as well as the procedure used.

I don't know the type of procedure done. It was done by Dr. Mayer in Beverly Hills.

edit:

sorry for the original post. I'm still about loopy from the procedure and my brain isn't working at maximum capacity.

I went to the doctors web site and I didn't find anything about voice surgery. I suspect it was CTA which was done stand alone in the past. It has the limitation of restricting the range of the final voice so VFS tends to be favored today as the first line of voice adjustment. CTA would have the advantage that you can use your voice right after surgery. In any case, if you had CTA, most likely there will be a little swelling after surgery that will disturb your voice for a while so judging your voice at this point may not tell you much. Here is a link to Dr Haben's site which will tell you more about both surgeries.

Hi bunny,

I've noticed the same. When I whisper, I basically sound like my old self, but when I speak I sound very different than before. I suspect it's because whispering uses a different way of producing sound that doesn't involve much of any or none of the vocal cords. If nothing but the vocal cords have been modified, this would be the reason why your whispering sounds the same as before.

You can basically whisper in a higher register to fix the problem. :)

How long did it take you to get where your voice is now after the surgery? I notice my voice now it's easier to talk but still raspy or squeeky.

Whatever type of surgery you had, there will be some swelling that could take months to clear up. In addition, you will need to learn how to use the new voice which will be difficult to start until your voice stabilizes from the surgery. In my case it was 7 months before my voice started to return to normal and a year before it was mostly there. I have heard good voices at 6 weeks so it's very personal.

I believe the surgery was CTA without VFS. CTA is an older procedure and would be done as part of the same procedure as the adams apple. Some of the earlier CTA surgeries were done with the patient awake so the doctor could test the adjustment during the surgery and speaking after surgery shouldn't disturb the surgery.

I don't think you are supposed to be talking 2 days past your surgery! The people I know that had it weren't allowed to talk AT ALL for at least a week.
