Last year, Emerson College, following Tufts University, changed the signs on 21 restrooms in campus buildings. The gender-neutral signs were introduced last fall because students who consider themselves transgender were uncomfortable choosing a male or female bathroom.

Is a transgender student confused about which sex he or she is? Or
have such students had a medical or surgical procedure to change their biology to match their mental orientation? And how large is the number to require this unusual change in restroom practices?
