I realize that many folks fear that terror is everywhere. Bear I mind that a key goal of terror actions is to produce that fear, the fear that unpredictable violence may strike at any time.
The thing is, it is actually an unreasonable fear. We are far less likely to suffer violence at the hands of an extremist than we are at the hands of someone on a hurry making a left turn, or failing to properly rig a scaffold, or spilling their coffee on the stairs. These are all actions that can maim or kill, violently. And, they happen every day.
Extremism in all its forms doesn't do us any good. It is something to be avoided. In the longer term we can minimize it around us through education to inoculate against extremist beliefs, through community to reduce the isolation and loneliness that makes someone vulnerable to extremist teachings, and by awareness, of our surroundings, of others, and of situations.
And don't walk under any ladders, and always look both ways before you cross the street.
