I spoke with my regular therapist yesterday after writing a letter to her explaining who I am, she was excited to hear the news and very supportive of my direction.  She and I then looked on line for local sources for taking the next step, as it was after normal working hours we didn't have anyone to call at the time.  She recommended two, one well respected clinic for me and another outside of that for my wife and I for couples counseling.
From the experiences of those who have gone before me, what should I expect for both of these on my/our first appointment?  Are there any questions I should be asking or thoughts on previous visits anyone has had with these?

Ellen,
First congratulations on taking this step. It was warming to here your therapist was supportive and helpful. I hope it all works out well for you.
I'm sorry I cannot give you any enlightenment on what to expect as I am in the same situation. I meet next week
with a psychiatrist for initial intake assessment. I will be interested in the responses you get too.

  Hugs,
    Jeanette

Often first appoints are "Getting to Know You" sessions, family psych-social history questions and other background stuff. Seems like you are sort of past this point though. It just may be jumping into the deep end and getting right to why you are there
