There has been an effort to sort, label and create relationships in music similar to what the Human Genome Project is doing in genetics - called, not oddly, The Music Genome Project.

The first real fruits of this are found at Pandora Radio, a web2.0 type site.

If you are on line all the time, and I am, you can open an account there (free) type in bands or composers you like and it will start playing music like that and similar to that.  So if you do "BACH" you get all the Bach music, from all the Bachs, and then it starts to play other stuff associated with counterpoint.  If you do "DYLAN" you got bob, and other people doing bob's songs, and other people like bob.  Then you can vote the song/cut up or down, and the site learns your taste and plays more of what you like, and less of what you don't.  It's way cool, and free.

yeah.  Somebody evil named Ell, told us about it.   I always vote down springsteen.

I mix up genres and get a nice play (except when springstink shows up).  I just hope that voting down makes a difference.  I do it very rarely and only on music I can't compromise on.

Yeah, its a sort of, kind of, form of AI, and when you vote a song down it keeps track, not only of Bruce, but other songs like that.

The more you rate songs up or down, the greater it refines the selections.

I discovered that if you choose Zappa, every 3rd song is zappa.  But maybe because I don't have a really long list.

Thanks for posting this. I never heard of it before but I am having a great time with it right now.

I've had better luck setting up stations based on a song than an artist.  I think that the list of determining characteristics is much longer - some 400 or so to pick from.  So when I picked J.S. Bach, I got Bach every third song or so, but when I went with Brandenburg Concerto No. 3 in G major, BWV 1048 I get less Bach and far more stuff written in counterpoint, like Telleman, Couperin, and Rameau.

From their site:

We believe that each individual has a unique relationship with music - no one else has tastes exactly like yours. So delivering a great radio experience to each and every listener requires an incredibly broad and deep understanding of music. That's why Pandora is based on the Music Genome Project, the most sophisticated taxonomy of musical information ever collected. It represents over seven years of analysis by our trained team of musicologists, and spans almost a century of music (and soon several centuries!).

Each song in the Music Genome Project is analyzed using up to 400 distinct musical characteristics by a trained music analyst. These attributes capture not only the musical identity of a song, but also the many significant qualities that are relevant to understanding the musical preferences of listeners. The typical music analyst working on the Music Genome Project has a four-year degree in music theory, composition or performance, has passed through a selective screening process and has completed intensive training in the Music Genome's rigorous and precise methodology. To qualify for the work, analysts must have a firm grounding in music theory, including familiarity with a wide range of styles and sounds. All analysis is done on location.

The Music Genome Project's database is built using a methodology that includes the use of precisely defined terminology, a consistent frame of reference, redundant analysis, and ongoing quality control to ensure that data integrity remains reliably high. Pandora does not use machine-listening or other forms of automated data extraction.

I've been wondering how pandora could be legal.  I assume they use revenue from ads, but I never see any ads.  I just turn it on and minimize it while I go about my business.  Maybe it's not legal, which wouldn't surprise me considering the sources who revealed it to us (Tekla & Ell).  [/kidding]

actually i've heard that musicians really like Pandora. i wouldn't feel comfortable using it if i felt it was taking advantage of them. i like it so much that i got an itunes account and started buying songs online.

Don't ask me why, or even how, but I love you.

It isn't that they run ads. They give you an opportunity to buy things you like. Also, I found that when I tried to skip about 5 songs in a row I got a message that said "Our license does not allow users to skip so many songs during one session." That means that the interjected songs themselves are the ads.

There is something of a loophole in the law that you can only skip so many - and can't go back either - that gives it a different set of requirements.  The project itself has received a lot of money from musicians and musical foundations.  It does offer direct links to either buy the physical CD, or pay to download from iTunes, and it that a lot of people in the industry are happy to let it be, as its harder and harder for anyone to get any new music heard.

Given the mistakes the RIAA has made over the last decade, a trip down the road might well prove too much for them to handle.  I'm waiting for one of the majors to drop them this year.  And of course its legal, I would never tell anyone to do anything against the law (in writing).
