Hello All,
I live in Georgia relatively near Atlanta. I am also trangendered. I want to be....no, let me rephrase that....I AM a woman. However, I was born with a birth defect that gave me the body of a man. I need some outlet, some place that I can BE...ME. Unfortunately, Georgia does have a LOT of very close minded people who do not understand or accept trans issues. And to top matters off, I am not employed. I was fortunate enough to retire early. However, my wife IS employed and works in a very high profile job in the public eye where it would cause her serious problems if it were discovered that her husband wanted to become a woman on the outside as well as on the inside. (and before anyone tries to reassure me that it's not as bad as I think, a couple of years ago, i told a therapist about my situation and she agreed with me that it was too risky for me to try to "come out"!) However, I am at a point where I could travel a bit to another city in the SE USA to be a part of a group where I could experience a small slice of life as a woman. So does anyone know of any good transgender support groups somewhere where I can go an meet and talk with others like me and maybe get to go to a safe restaurant for a meal or anything else?

I don't know of a place but the place to start is google "city LGBT" and see what it finds. Often there are LGBT centers and they will be able to provide you with what's available locally. If you are uncomfortable locally, pick a city within reasonable driving distance and see what you can find there.

Things have change a good deal in the last couple of years however some of the good got better and some of the bad, worst. Without knowing a good deal more about your wife's profession, I am not going to advise you in that area.

As to my wife's profession....she is definitely in the "Some got worse" over the past few years category. She is open minded and accepting but she is in the extreme minority in her job and if it were to come out that I was Trans it would affect her job. (I know it's SUPPOSEDLY illegal to do so but it still happens!) It might be as minimal as affecting her chances of a promotion, it could easily affect any possible transfers and where she was transferred to, it could easily cause her to be "Moved to another area" at a lower salary, and COULD even lead to her getting "transferred" as a means to force her (me) away totally. And I can't tell you more but let me assure you that these are not just me being worried and scared. They COULD actually happen.

Hi Allison,

http://www.atlantagender.org/othergroups.html

This is a link to some groups around the Atlanta area. Hope this helps!! :)
They must find it difficult, those who have taken authority as truth, rather than truth as authority.

My (biological) father lives in Monroe County (Forsyth, GA) and I tried to get him to go to a PFLAG group in Macon to help him deal with my transition. Unfortunately he decided to pretend I didn't exist, but that's another story.

Having been in that area many time, I certainly understand your dilemma with that area. I do remember there was a PFALAG group in Macon, but I don't know if there is a transgender group or not. Certainly worth checking out:

Thank You, Sydney. It's nice to here from someone who understands how backward some people in the SO\outh can be. And when it's you livelihood and food on the table that's at stake, you learn to err on the side of caution. I'm sorry to hear that your Father chose to disown you. I have no doubt that he made a stupid decision that day. And I pray that someday he will realize that he really does want a relationship with his daughter. On another note, I noticed your profile said that you were 6'5. How do you find clothes that fit? And WHERE? I'm 5'15" ( ;)) in stocking feet and I'm ALWAYS looking for pretty things that would fit a tall (and fat) girl like me!

Having a 37" inseam can be very challenging. I get a most of my leggings/pants from Long Tall Sally. (The rules prevent me from putting link in here, but they are easy to find with Google. They go up to a size 18/20 (I'm a 16).

For summer items Lane Bryant is a good resource, but you have to try on tops to make sure they are long enough.

Some others are:

ASOS
Alloy Apparel
