Saturday, 11 days ago, I had a manicure with standard polish not gel.  Unbelievably it did not chip or peal.  The nails grew a bit so there is a 2 or 3 millimeter gap between the polish and the cuticles.  I'm going to live with it until Sunday.

Now my question: do I remove the polish before going back or should I leave it and let them remove it?

And

They offer a cheaper "color change only" which I think would be okay since I don't need the cuticles cleaned up this time.

Good topic.

I would like to see it expanded a little as this is completely foreign territory for me.
Obviously I have no answers for you.

I go for a manicure every week and it makes no difference to them, if I remove the polish first or not.
I'm a 65 year old male who has been thinking about SRS for many years.  I also was a  full cross dresser for a few years.  I wear a bra, pantyhose and nail polish daily because it just feels right.

My girlfriend leaves hers on.  I haven't gone yet since that much ethyl acetate and acetone in the air scares me a bit.

My sister, who goes in every two weeks and has much more experience than me, says that they will usually do an acetone soak to remove it then buff or file down your nail if needed.

I hope that is helpful info.... I have only had my nails done like 2-3 times and only once had a mani...... so that wasn't info I had on hand lol

(I'm sneaky and told her a birth mom was asking me since she knows I talk to a lot of them online and she is still kinda in the dark about things for me... she knows something is up, but we haven't talked like my other sister.)

I get mani/pedi's on a regular basis. I always soak off mine if they are gel/shellac. I've had them want to grind it off and damage nails. If it's my polish I'll let them wipe it off. Get the good professional grade soak off stuff. Get a buffing foam and scratch up the finish first it works faster. Cuticle scraper helps too.

I always get regular polish (usually clear on my fingers, color on my toes) and I always leave it on for my next visit.  My wife always cleans hers off.  The folks at the salon don't have an opinion or preference.  It's really just about whether you can stand to look at your own nails with less than perfect polish on them.  (I can  ;D)

I do my own mani. That way i'm in control of the process and what goes on my nails.

Things I've learned. Feel free to add to the list if you have any more tips.

1. Don't buff your nails to smooth out ridges.
2. Don't use cuticle cutters.
3. Do use a good cuticle oil every night
4. Do use a ridge filling base coat to prevent staining and smooth out the surface. You still may get some yellowing with certain polishes though.
5. Avoid caffeine before painting your nails or you'll end up painting the house.
6. Use a crystal nail file, a bit expensive, but your nails will thank you for it.
7. If you have issues painting with your non-dominant hand use a flat surface and move the hand you're painting instead of the brush.
8. Apply thin coats, the better quality the polish the easier it will be.
9. Always use a top coat to seal the deal.
10. Try to find a polish that hasn't been tested on animals. Bunnies will thank you for it.
11. Find colours you're comfortable wearing. Not everything will suit your mood or personality. It's a woman thing.
12. Use rubber gloves when doing the dishes, manis hate hot water. Just be more careful in general in how you treat your nails if you want to grow them out. Nothing worse than a broken nail that could have been prevented with a little due care and attention.
13. Enjoy the process, it's an art that takes a little practice and patience to master. The world slows down when you paint your nails and wait for things to dry. It's a good me time.
14. When you're ready to remove your polish use a good acetone free remover to prevent drying, followed by a good oil.
15. And the most important tip, always make sure you've had a pee before you start painting your masterpiece. Seriously. Nothing worse than needing the ladies room with wet nails. ;)

I did like you, but most women who are wearing manicure do clean the nails with acetone. My female friends hate my untidy nails with messy manicure. I do not care so much about it, but most women are picky about it. Yes. Removing manicure completely before applying again makes your nails look tidy.

Just do it.

I go in every 2-3 weeks and don't remove the polish. they have never seemed to care one way or another.

Every girl in my family has a problem with nail biting, I'll be an exception, so once out fully it should be pretty easy for me to grow them, just a bit of base coat to help prevent chipping and I'd have great nails with my habits.
