I had a chance to meet retired Army Col. Sheri Swokowski at Keystone this year.  Her story is very interesting.

As an Navy person who was found to be TG while in service in 72-73.

I know some TG in the military now. 
AMAB - NOV 13 1950
HRT - Start 1975 / End 1985
Moved in with SO ( Also a MtF ) - 1976 / She didn't believe in same sex marriage
Name Change - NOV 30 1976
FT - Formal letter from work - APR 12 1977
SRS - SEP 13 1977
SO died - OCT 03 2014  38 years not a bad run

Thanks for posting this, Stephanie.  I read a sympathetic article about a transgender woman sergeant at our local Ft. Carson in our local, conservative newspaper.  She gets on well with her unit -- her soldiers respect and obey without problem.  One thing I remember is that during physical training (running/fast marching) she can't keep her feminine voice while shouting out counts for her unit.
If so, then why not?
