hi Peeps,

Just want to know how long you have to wait after electrolysis before you can wear foundation?
I've got some of those unsightly white dots that I really want to cover up but not sure if it's advisable to start slapping on the makeup. I had my first  treatment on my top lip yesterday.
Also how long does it take for those little white dots to clear?

Thanks,

Sadie

Hi Sadie,

Good question on the makeup. Inquiring minds want to know...

White dot? I don't recall any white dots, just red slightly swollen areas where she was working.

Did you try washing your face?  LOL

Hugs,

Electrolysis or Laser. I have had about 16 treatments now and have not experienced white dots. My idea is the person doing the electrolysis is not pulling the hair after zapping waiting instead for them to fall out. I don't know for sure but it seems the most plausible. The reason I say this is because at my last session Nancy didn't pluck all the hairs after zapping and I was able to wash the dead hair off. They did turn white after being zapped. Otherwise on the skin, red is the predominant color, but is usually gone before I reach home after a 45 minute drive.

I shower and cleanse my face normally and put makeup on the next day.  I've not had an issue from doing that with laser or electrolysis.  I'll do 4 hours of electro on a Monday and get up Tuesday morning and do my makeup normally.  I cleanse with witch hazel in between a couple times.

The electrolyte technicians that I have worked with suggest 72 hours but realize that most of those clients break that rule. The risk is infection and some folks are more or less susceptible to that. I have also heard different explanations for the white dots or blemishes, the common theme of them is to let them heal on their own without picking or abuse. It takes more patience than I often have.  - Anne

Four hours? What do you use for pain relief? l tried to do a two hour session and had to quit after one. I pretreat with Lidocaine and it almost killed me. Literally. I got violently ill. Holy Molie it hurts.

Yes, it's quite common to get white dots, but i'm not sure I have a very skilled electrocusioner. I had a few red flags when I booked my appointment and was not told to let my beard grow out a bit before treatment, or of any pre or aftercare.
Frantically searching around today for another in my area. They either seem to be ridiculously expensive or bargain basement.

Peace and love and all that good stuff,

Sadie

I have had it with lidocaine and without, and with hydrocodone and without.  Yes, it hurt(s)!  But, now that I am so far along the hairs are not as coarse and I just take the pain.  I have fallen asleep on her several times.  She laughs when I wake up because she cannot believe I can fall asleep.  When she does my upper lip tears still come out, but it is short lived at this point.  I did laser on my face multiple times before electro.

My wife and I were calculating just yesterday and based on how many laser sessions I have had, and since my last one was 8 months ago, and number of electro hours I have been thru, and taking into account the average hairs on a face and the number my electrolygist can do in an hour, we figure about 50 more hours of electro for me.  Based on that, I want to get it over with, and since I drive 7 hours round trip to go there, I do as many hours at a time as I can.   No beauty without pain.  That is what my Mother tells me.

This is reason enough to do a mini marathon session. There are places that do 2 techs for up to 10 hours. One difference is that this is done under injectable anesthesia by a licensed physician. You are totally numb for the entire session.

We all have our own pain tolerance. My electrologist  tells me that I am able to handle twice the galvanic setting than any of her other patients. I use topical Lidocaine to help with the pain. Yes, it still hurts, but it is worth it.

As for redness or other irritation caused by electrolysis, I sometimes apply 1 % Hydrocortisone creme after the session to help reduce the inflammation.

As for make up, I can apply concealer the next morning as long as the redness is gone. Someone else may have to wait a day or two until the skin returns to normal.

Well it feels like I've been butchered after all the comments I've been reading of a bit of redness that calms in a few hours. I know have unsightly scabs covering a lot of my top lip, I'm just praying they don't scar.
One day things will go right for me, yes, I'm feeling sorry for myself >:(. "Snap out of it Sadie, it's a beautiful day without a cloud". Now I'm talking to Myself, geez what a fine pickle I've gotten myself into.

Peace and love and all that good stuff,

Hi Sadie,

I think I remember some gals mentioning a bit of scabbing after  having a session ,but I am not sure. One piece of advice... Don't pick!! It could very easily be normal. Don't assume the worst.

My electrocutioner mentioned  hydrosomething or other was oozing up out of the treated follicles that she was treating and kept dabbing it away. After she was done zapping she cleaned the areas she worked on well with witch hazel and applied a nice smelling moisturizer to help calm the skin. I did not experience any white dots or scabbing that I noticed.

Hope all turns out well,
  Laurie

When I go home my top lip was covered in this egg yellow stuff. I assumed it was an infection but looked more like melted fat to me, or could be that hydro stuff ye speaks of. Anywho, non of this was explained as possible side effects  of the treatment which gives me cause for concern.
I've found a new electrocutioner with tons of good ratings (if we can ever believe in ratings) and is actually £10 cheaper. Will book up once I get over sulking.
This weekend was going to be the big Sadie reveal at an extended family get together. They already know I'm trans so told everybody to be prepared for a big change, and now it just ain't gonna happen :( Aaaaaargh! Not an excuse, but I can't wear makeup and have a scabby top lip. Not the portrait I wanted to paint on my big reveal.

Peace and love and all that good stuff,

Sadie

If you are not seeing those white dots I would be really concerned that your Electrologist has not got the current high enough and you will be revisiting those hairs in the future. Those white dots are full of Lye and will either just sit there and eventually disappear by themselves.

I don't wear any makeup at least for the first 24 hrs and then if its bad a further 24 hrs. As electrolysis progresses you will find the hairs are finer and finer to deal with so leave less of a mess of your face.

Simple answer IMHO min 24 hrs after...at least to give a chance for the scabs to form. I have only ever had one infected follicle and that hurt for a few days until it began to heal.

Hi Liz, *waves enthusiastically*

So dots and scabs are normal huh? I guess I'll be asking my electrocutioner tomorrow some questions. She did see that she was getting the stuff oozing from the holes and it was what she expected to see. She cleaned the areas well with witch hazel and then moisturized. The clean up before I left felt nice. I was a little swollen and red where she worked but it went away after a few hours and I had no scabbing at all neither did I notice dots but I wasn't looking for such things.

  Next update tomorrow... lol

Good to see you posting Liz. (((Hugs)))

Thanks Liz, that makes me feel a little better.

I think because nothing was explained to me after the session on what to expect I got a bit scared.

I'm not sure if it's something I want to continue with. I have really good skin as is and it's just going to eat up my savings. So a double shave in the morning and one at night will probably suffice for now.
If or when I'm offered HRT and have had my counselling I may think again, but for now I'm happy just to get to know Sadie.

Peace and love and all that good stuff,

Sadie.

My electrologist (very experienced in her field, and helps run American Electrology Association) recommends baby diaper rash ointment the first day or two after treatment.  She said it's ok to apply foundation on top of the diaper rash ointment.  I know it sounds crazy to apply "diaper rash ointment" to an adult face but it works great - and if you think about it, that stuff is routinely used without negative side effects on very tender skin.  Easy to find, and cheap to buy.

At the O2 clinic in Belgium they ask you not to wear any foundation and avoid exposition to the sun for 48 hours. Use Sterex creams extensively.

Kendra I am intrigued...why diaper rash ointment, does it form some kind of barrier between the skin and makeup?

Yes - as a barrier between skin and makeup, or to help speed up healing.  I never applied makeup over it, but just last week my electrologist mentioned she has MTF clients who routinely use a thin layer of diaper rash ointment under makeup.

I do something similar, washing carefully with a germicidal soap, rinsing, applying witch hazel, and after it dries, I apply an aloe vera gel.  The witch hazel is a mild astringent to help close the pores and reduce irritation, and the gel seals up the skin nicely.

Once the gel dries, I find that I can apply foundation with a stippling brush (airbrush would work, of course) and not have it penetrate the thin film of dried gel.  When I wash things off that evening, the gel is definitely still there under the foundation, and that area comes clean with water, without makeup remover or even a simple cleaner or soap.
