How long did it took to transition full-time to your preferred gender? I know that it will take some time but I don't know exactly how much time it takes to transition.

Catherine,

I started a kind of stealth transition, changing little things one at a time, trying to "femme up" without raising to many flags.  That was probably about 10 years ago.  My deliberate transition started around July of last year, when I made my first appointment to solicit a prescription for HRT.  From July, I started taking estradiol and spironolactone, changed my name in January of this year, came out to my family in April, and then out to everyone at work and on social media as of May.

So in a sense it took less than a year, or maybe it took almost 10 years.  I tend to count from the point of my decision.  All of the vacillating before that was probably more like experimenting than transitioning.

From the time I seriously started to consider whether I was transgender to the time I started full-time was less than two years.  The first year of that was investigating, fretting and procrastinating.

I came out to my wife last June.  I immediately sought out therapy and a support group.  I started HRT in January this year, and started full-time in April.  I won't consider my transition done until I have GRS, hopefully next year sometime.

2015-07-04 Awakening; 2015-11-15 Out to self; 2016-06-22 Out to wife; 2016-10-27 First time presenting in public; 2017-01-20 Started HRT!!; 2017-04-20 Out publicly; 2017-07-10 Legal name change; 2019-02-15 Approval for GRS; 2019-08-02 Official gender change; 2020-03-11 GRS; 2020-09-17 New birth certificate

I contacted a therapist in autumn 2014, and came out to my Ex a couple of months later. Tried to keep in the closet... failed. Moved out in autumn 2015 and started laser hair removal. In spring 2016 had FUE hair transplants and started to get out in public. End of 2016 I had a tummy tuck following substantial wieght loss. I went full time last month and hope to start HRT in the next few weeks. So for me about 2.5 years between deciding to do something and going full-time. But large parts of that time were focused on weight loss,  hair removal or recovering from surgeries. All through that time I have been working with my therapist,  and only decided on a full transition in autumn 2016, less than a year ago.

I just straight up went full time as soon as i decided I wanted to pursue this direction. This was April 2010.

In hindsight this was rushed out of an absolute hatred of having to live a 'male life'. I should have taken things slower as its much easier i think to get things like laser hair removal or electrolysis completed while still presenting as male than how awkward facial hair made life for the first year of my transition lol.

But yeah for me it was a sudden and immediate change.

I fought transitioning just about all my life. At age 50 I hit a wall and could no longer continue as him. I am turning 55 at he end of the month. I am still transitioning, although I have been full time since 11/13/2016. I had FFS, GCS, labiaplasty, hair transplants and BA in July. Then I will have VFS most likely in October ( a month of silence). I tried desperately to save my marriage and twisted in limbo for several years since 12/2012.  My path just had to be traveled; I realize now the pain and suffering was the result of not being on my path.

I guess if I did not get held up at work presenting and was not trying to compromise to save a doomed marriage and my GCS/BA went as planned I would be at this point 3 years ago.

12 years.  I never I was trans for a fact at 16 and slowly become more and more androgynous until it felt safe to start transitioning at 27 and out at 28.

You can see the time to start to some end can very quite a bit.

My rough timings back in the 70s, you can see in my and others signature areas.  My own times were limited by the fact back then that there were no legal laws, so had to wait until fully ready to go full time.

I never really transitioned... I was raised with parents who wanted their children to be what they wanted. My parents knew I was "different" from several months old cause I am actually intersex'ed too with gynecomastia. I had an awkward stage for sure, but I have been living as my gender for 90% of my life.

However, sometimes I feel like I am still "transitioning" because sometimes I feel like I can never compete with cis-women, even though I'm incredibly stealth and passable.
