Hey everyone !

Can someone explain:

1. what tissue granulation in the vagina is ?
2. What does it look like
3. Why is it a problem
4. Does it go away on its own, or does it need attention ?
5. What causes it ?

It's tissue that has a reddish pink color to it and stands out from the surrounding tissue. It's a normal part of the healing process but it's not as strong as the regular tissue. Many times it will clear up by it's self but if it doesn't, treatment is required to remove it and form normal tissue. For about the first couple of months you will most likely have it but if it's not clearing up after that, it will require treatment. Depending on your surgeon, you might be able to email pictures though you should set up a working relationship with a gynecologist so the outside and inside can be checked. I was pretty clean outside but I needed a couple of treatment to clear up the inside.

I was able to observe the granulation tissue when the skin was growing back on my arm. I thought it looked like a tongue; bumpy and pink. Before that came tofu day. My friend warned me that one morning I'd find a whitish skin on the wound. He was right, it peeled off like a piece of pre-sliced cheese and stayed intact. Underneath was the granulation tissue. The human body is an amazing thing.

No. It looks like red or pinkish red skin and it doesn't peel or flake off. If it heals normally, the skin turns from red to normal. The wikipedia is a bit more red than what I have seen but you can get the general idea from it. Sometimes when you get a cut, as part of the healing you will see a red line where the cut is. That's granulation.

Would'nt a vaginal speculum be invaluable for dilation, if granulation was present ?

nope but an exam would be needed to identify granulation inside the vagina.

A speculum is pretty brutal and a doctor shouldn't even use one on you for at least a couple of months after surgery. I would much rather have a dilator in me than one of those things. 

Oh, I didnt realize it was brutal.  My surgeon used what I thought was one, to look inside my vagina.. it didnt seem to hurt.. or perhaps i was still very numb from surgery.

I can see a problem that inserting the dilator reopens granulated tissue, or at least very white damaged tissue, causing pain and bleeding.

My idea with the speculum is that it can be used to open the vagina, easily place the dilator inside, then remove the speculum. So that there is no friction on wounded tissue. 


Still a bad idea ?

My surgeon advised me to continue my regular dilation routine and schedule during the granulation treatments. The treatment will cause the skin to contract and you don't want to let that happen so continue dilation as normal.
I didn't have any pain from dilation right after the treatments (in fact it felt pretty good). About a week after my first treatment minor bleeding started again and I had to go back for a second treatment and two weeks after that a third treatment. The 3rd treatment finally cured it. The doctor said it is not unusual for it to take several treatments..

If the doctor used one on you, he may not have opened you up very much. When I received a normal examination, the doctor put it in and stretched me all the way out so he could get a good look. It's much easer to slowly insert the dilator than be opened up in a couple of seconds. Another issue using your approach is you will still need to move the dilator to depth so the granulation is going to get stretched one way or the other. The best approach is purchase plenty of lube and use it. If you need a cheap source, let me know.

Thanks for your advice Dena. I was really bad off after my 24 hour flight, and nothing seem to be helping until I read about hydrocortizone.  I went to the store and bought the spray-on instead of salve.    Wow!!!!  What a huge difference.  I try not to spray too much on it bei iause my mom says it can dissolve stitches.

The pain and bleeding went away, and the swelling and white flesh went away too for the most part.  Its still very vulneranle to heat, but healing has been tremendous. 

The granulated area will be red, inflamed and possibly swollen/tend. It's usually treated with silver nitrate but might take a month or two for healing. Not a big deal
