I am looking for a new job.  I am no longer willing to continue in my current position, and need a change.  I am uncertain how to approach the process with what I am doing.  Do I put down Female?  Do I wait until I actually go fulltime?  Do I wait until I legally change my name/gender to put down female or use my real name?  I am not fulltime, and am not sure if I am passable enough to go full time yet.

What jobs/companies are generally transgender friendly?  Is Indiana really so backwards that I will find it extremely difficult to get a job?

Walmart is the one company I know that is transgender friendly. We have several members who work there and are very happy. If you are applying as a male, it would be best not to bring up the transgender issues until after you have finished probation though some have come out after they were accepted for the job but before they started work. If the company has a LGBT policy you are pretty safe bringing it up early on.

I lost my job shorty before going full time so rather than delay full time, I applied for work as Dena. Fortunately in those days, they didn't do much in the way of background checking so my social security number and drivers license didn't preset a problem. Today, social security will kick back something if the name/number isn't a perfect match so a discussion with personal may be required at some point. Staying with your current job and attempting a transition there is far less complicated but if you are willing to do the additional work, you can get a new job.

Here is a list of the top Trans friendly employers. http://www.hrc.org/resources/corporate-equality-index-list-of-businesses-with-transgender-inclusive-heal

As I advise everyone. Show your value not your desire to be employed. Everyone wants a job. It is hardest at the entry level because everyone brings essentially the same skill set or none at all. With education you have a better shot. Even trade school. But once you have the education you will be competing on another level and if you can influence the bottom line better than the next person it really does not matter what you wear to work. Now I could see you being less inclined to visit customers etc. But it should not be a hindrance in getting a job. Talk positively, act decisively, and offer praise and by all means  be yourself.

I have had 7 jobs in the since 1992.  One of them was my time in the US Army, 2 (4) of them were one of two companies first as dishwasher then cook the second as cook then dietary manager.  Aside from a short period as a specialty window cutter, I have spent the better part of the last 25 years working in food service.  I'm burnt out on food service, but I can't take a pay cut either.  I almost never have the requisite qualifications for a decent paying job, and starting at minimum wage is a nonstarter for me, and when I do have the qualifications it's typically in food service.

I doubt I can go back to Walmart, we didn't end our relationship on the best of terms.  They kept having my hours suddenly vanish, and even though they asked me to stay over, since I wasn't scheduled those hours I couldn't get them returned.  I told them to stuff it and left, and it wasn't that nice either.  Worked the deli and frozen.

Don't mind me, just really frustrated as of late.
