Hey all, I'm just here to vent a little bit.

My name is Emitt, I'm a 15 year old *FTM. When I was 13, my biological mother left my family, and it's been so hard on me. It's not because of the emotional burden of having her gone - it's because of how she left. She left me with my young sibling, and my non-biological father. He has no legal custody over me, and we can't fight for it because it's expensive and we don't even know where my mother is. My father and I both want to get my name changed but yet again its expensive and we're not sure if we can do that without him having legal custody. We also want to get me started on T but again, the legal custody thing. I don't know why my father doesn't have legal custody, he's been with me my entire life. You don't have to offer advice or sympathy or anything - I just need to get things off my chest. I have nobody else to talk to.

Honey, I am so sorry you are having such a tough time with something that is not your fault at all. I have two sons, 11 and 14, and I love them with all my heart.  It was so hard for me to leave my home when my marriage fell apart. I live only two miles away, but it is still hard. I can't even imagine a woman leaving her kids behind with no trace.

There are legal clinics that offer pro bono advice. Tell your biological father to check into it.  If you were my son or daughter (I'm a little confused because you say you are MtF but want to get back on testosterone), there would be no such thing as too expensive. I would find a way.  Not everything requires a lawyer.

Until then, please come back and keep in touch, okay?

With much love and kindness,

Terri

Welcome to Susan's Place. Many court actions can be accomplished by filling out the correct paper work, paying the court fee and then showing up before the judge. For this type of action a lawyer isn't required but you may want to look into legal aid for your state. You have two options available to you. Your father might adopt you or you might become an emancipated minor. Either approach would enable you to make decisions free of your mother's influence.

As an example of how this works, I am altering the name and gender on my birth certificate without a lawyer and the cost is under $400.

I often signed wavers for my non-biological son and I wasn't even married to his mother. Straight face sometimes is all it takes.

I meant to say FTM, just a silly typo. I will try to keep in touch and update on how things are going. We are actively trying to learn how to go about things, I know it won't be this way forever. It's just hard.
