I know this is last years news but had the US election gone down in Canada, Clinton would have beaten Trump by 60%. Had it been Trump vs Sanders, Sanders would have won by 64%

As followes, in no province would Donald have won more then about a quartor of the vote. Places that are strong-holds for the Canadian Conservative Party would vote agasint Trump.Even in the most Conservative places like Alberta and Saskatchewan and the strongly Conservative leaning provinces of British Columbia and Manitoba Trump would get clobbered by atleast 50% or so. Among Conservative supports Trump would lose by about 30% and close to 80% for Liberal and NDP voters. Trump was especially unpopular in Quebec and the Atlantic provinces. Ontario was the closest in mirroring the national average.

At one time the US was saying "54-40 or fight".

Does anyone remember what that means?

Yes, a good part of what is now Canada almost became part of the US.

Just think of the possibilities of how different things could be.

Yeaaa..... I will pass :D

I like the US, but I would be afirad of society would have become more conservative with lgbt, race and ect had we became part of it. Probably not, but that chance remains. Plus universal health care and just being our own :D

If the US had a few more reasonable people here, we would not have the problem with civil rights and health care. Majority rules.

Clinton won the popular vote by several million people.  Trump won the election because of our archaic electoral college system designed in the 19th century to give more presidential election votes to slave holding states.

What is your point? The US is not Canada. Sharing a border does not mean we share the same national culture or values.

It is just interesting to see how this all happened. You are right, we share the same border but not culture and seemingly certian not values.

I am just flabbergasted Trump got elected, and is now causing harm to the trans community and likley many other communities soon.

My point is, is that it is amazing that in only 3 countires, USA, Russia and Israel is Trump even liked or even has any amount of backers.

i guess my question is how did this happen?

The Democrats ran a candidate who was extremely controversial and intensely mistrusted by a lot of people.  They also ran a poor campaign without a clear message.

Yes. That is very very true. It was abit of an embarseement. Still, its not like Clinton ran agaisnt Romney or Charlie Baker in which her lose could be reasonable and not too bad. She lost agaisnt Trump.... A guy who lies non stop, mocks the disabled, attacks Mexicans and women yet doesnt get punished for it. Instead, rewarded. Thats the part that loses me. Hilarys campaighn was pathetic yes, but her oppoenent was the worst form of person if you look at the low blows he did.

i guess my question is how did this happen?

A combination of a two-party system, modern statistical modeling of the population combined with statistical behavioral science, essentially unlimited election spending, and an available demagogue and media star all contributed to this.

There were some significant mis-steps by both political parties early on, which created an opening for a faction loosely allied with one party.  Money and careful modeling and behavioral study allowed the fabrication of a 'grass roots' political movement supporting a useful demogogue.

There's a very good documentary that covers some of this.  As with all things political, it will of course be divisive.

What bothers me the most is that the mechanisms and wealth applied for the election are now being applied to create political targets that can be used to promote viewpoints and policies, as rewards for various supporting factions.  One of the targets being so used is the transgender community, unfortunately, as a reward for certain religious factions.

Actually, I think the people in the US and Canada share a lot of our cultures and values.  Much more so than most countries that share a common border.  My family has a Canadian branch (Calgary and Vancouver) that I know pretty well.  Warm, thoughtful, well-grounded people.  Canadians are like Americans - on better behavior.
