Hi, so I am well aware epilating my face could cause scarring, but my only question is, will it reduce my hair/cause it to be fine in the long term?

Thank you guys in advance!

NO!  Epilation can be thought of as plucking on an industrial scale.  It does not affect the root bulb.   The only solution to unwanted facial hair is to destroy the hair follicle with laser or electrolysis.  All you'll do with an epilator applied to your face is tear yourself up.  Don't do it.

I began this journey when I began to think, but it took what it took for me to truly understand the what and the why of authenticity.  I'm grateful to have found a path that works and to live as I have always dreamed.

The dates are unimportant and are quite stale now.  The journey to truth is fresh and never ends.

An epilator will likely lead to a lot of ingrowns. The scarring can cause difficulty with future electrolysis

I've actually tried this, after about 10 shots of tequila. Not sure I could handle the pain with any less, especially on the upper lip...

While I did get like one ingrown hair, the biggest problem I had is that you have to let it grow out long enough for the epilator to grab. Also, it doesn't look quite the same as regular beard stubble when doing the growing out. I did it again like 4 days later, but I don't see how this could really work if one wants to leave the house everyday en femme.

It may destroy some of the hair follicles at the root over time, but it would be over a very long time period, like decades...

I really considered it, and then I did research about it online.  From what I have read, it makes hair removal very difficult, because the hairs grow back in such a way that it is not uniform, and it makes it harder for the electrologist to find the root.  As to how far the validity to this is, I am not sure, but it certainly kept me from doing it.. except for a little patch on my throat.  I could handle the pain, but I don't want to make things harder for myself in the future.

dont! I tried it and it hurt like nothing ever and left an awful scab for a week.
Let's see where this journey takes me.

I bought an epilator made for the face that comes with tools for the face that has done nothing bad to my face. No pain, either. Not sure if the people complaining about epilators have ever tried a modern one.

So always epilate? No laser or electrolysis? And how do you do this living full time and then letting the hair grow so the epilator works again?
Latina :) I speak Spanish, English and a bit of Portuguese.

There are very few hairs that the epilator misses that are even grabbable with tweezers. I think it works on hair as short as .05 inches.

Epilating seems to be misunderstood. You can't run a rotating tool straight into a thick mat of curly beard hair. It's rapid fire tweezing. You shouldn't try an epilator until you're comfortable with tweezers or waxing.

What is the difference between an epilator made for the face and a regular one?

Mine has a facial cap that covers all but about 1/4" of the head, but it still really hurt.

The original question was about damage to the face. The machines now are made to work on facial areas. I have a cap too, but i don't put it on. Mine is a Braun Silk Epil 9.

Yes that's the same one I use as well I believe! But yeah I guess I was just wondering if it did reduce hair in the long run but I guess it doesn't. I don't know. I haven't really had any issues with it, not even scarring, and I have been using it for at least three or four months.

That's the one I have too!

I guess I have a lower pain threshold than the two of you...back when I was pretending to be a guy, I would be afraid to say such a thing, but I can't bring myself to do this again, even if another 10 shots of tequila were part of the picture...if I'm going to go through that much pain, it better be permanent...

I do like the Silk Epil 9 for my legs though, so it wasn't a complete waste of money.

   Hi y'all,
I plucked and tweezed like a mad woman on a mission for over 8 months had the hole thing gone. Bought an emogi epalator and tried it because things came up just didn't have time to pluck every free moment I had. It didn't work very good left stubble. It didn't evan work well on my arms.and legs. I will try the one ya talked about.
    Thanks

In general, no it won't reduce the hairs. Maybe for some, not for most.

I did fully pluck mine once. Couldn't take the epilator. It pulled too much skin.
So I tried IPL. I bought a Remington one. So at first it was EXCRUCIATING! Even on a medium settings. After a while the hairs did thin. My cheeks and neck remained thinned out but some hairs would not die. Just not enough energy for some deep hair roots. While it certainly worked on some of the hair. It also goes through its bulbs much faster than they would lead you to believe. On the high setting it may last once across the face maybe part of a second. Some last a lot longer than others. At $30 a bulb I spent a good $400 trying it.

It may have been worth it in some ways. Since it got rid of some hair I found my first laser was like nothing until the operator got around my chin where the hairs were still thick.

I also have the Braun Silk-épil 9, excellent quality.  Works great if you use it for what it was designed for.

And now for my, um, Too Much Information story.  I was using my epilator to take care of the relatively few hairs laser missed on my legs, worked great.  One day I wasn't paying attention while cruising around there with it and... it grabbed something I didn't have in mind.  Let's just say even a partial GCS isn't something to try on your own at home.

A few days after that I decided to use electrolysis to finish what laser had started.

Joanna,

Welcome to the site. Glad you joined us.

As I understand it, you can use it but it will not make the hair thinner. I too own the silk epil9 and it's attachments. I mostly use it on my body. My electrolysis technician made me promise not to do it where she will be working. She said it becomes harder for her to get hair treated with an epilator.

I had close to 80 hours electrolysis to my face...and tried 15 minutes with an epilator on my legs.
I would do another 80 hours electrolysis before I use an epilator again. I swear the device was used during the Spanish Inquisition.
2007/8 - name change, tracheal shave, electrolysis, therapy
2008 - full time
2014 - GCS Dr. Brassard; remarried
2018 (January)  - hubby and I moved off-grid
2019 - plan originally was to hike PCT in 2020, but now attempting Appalachian Trail - start date April 3.

You kind of get used to it.  :-\

I suggest a glass of something(if you can drink) ibuprofen an hour before and soak in a hot tub. Takes some of that pain off. However, don't mix medications or start drinking till you can't stop. It's just to relax.

Warmly
