Hello,

Has anyone used Lupron (28-day injection or...)  as a replacement for Spironalactone?  I would be on injection monthly,  Estradiol Cypionate weekly,  along with Tamsulosin (used for another purpose, but supposedly lowers T?)

Endo suggested stopping Spiro after my first injection (today)  but I'm worried about the "surge"  in T.    I'm not sure how worried I should be, or if the Tamsulosin and residual effects from the Spiro will be enough to mitigate it?

I did many years ago when I first started HRT back in 1996 (though I think it was daily injection... don't really remember)... It was expensive but my insurance at the time covered it.

The UK NHS use GNRH analogues as AAs as their standard HRT model. I'm currently on 3-monthly shots of Decapeptyl/Triptorelin. I was prescribed Cyproterone Acetate for the initial 2-week period to counteract the T spike that the GNRH drugs cause.
It certainly seems to be working,  T related mental and physical effects are greatly reduced. I won't be getting bloods for another 4 months,  so I can't tell you the measured difference yet. X

Have you checked the price? Those kinds of blockers are incredibly expensive.

I've been taking Lupron once a month for over a year now. I started due to other meds and spiro over taxing my kidneys. I haven't noticed too many changes since I switched off spiro. I due tend to notice some more of a cycle in  my libido around shot dates but that's about it. I get my hormones through the Brooklyn VA so I can't comment much on cost.

We're lucky in the UK that the NHS funds this,  but I'm sure cost is the major reason they are not used more widely.

I have no copay, as I get the injection at the Kaiser clinic.

Like the VA Medical Center? I recently moved to the Seattle area and I'm waiting on a referral to an outside endo provider due to the Seattle VA Endocrinology Department saying that I might have to wait until November for an appointment. My previous providers at the Augusta, GA provider said that the VA doesn't carry Lupron. But, thanks for this reply. Really helpful. (:

Yes, I've been getting treatment with the VA for over 2 years now. I started at the Oklahoma City VA and then transferred to Brooklyn (I live near by in Staten Island). If they can't schedule, you can be referred through Veteran's Choice which isn't too bad. I've actually had some minor issues with the VA, like I want to try prometrium since I only ever made it to tanner 3 in development, but my doctor refuses to try based on treatment guidelines. You might actually benefit from being sent to an outside provider if they're more experienced and open minded with treating trans patients.

Thank you. I'm sorry to hear about the issues you're dealing with and I definitely hope they clear up soon. I had horrible issues with the Augusta, GA VA for a while after I came out and sought transition. They had just hired a Gender Therapist, that was one positive thing. He was great, minus it seemed that he lacked experience. There were a few times that we ran into issues over it. But, the endocrinology department absolutely refused to accept my consult, stating that they've never dealt with any transition related hormone therapy. (Though I showed them numerous memos and directives that were placed by the VA) I was referred out using the choice program which took about three months for me to get seen by my previous ENDO. He was absolutely amazing and extremely knowledgeable. Anything regarding that VA was a major headache, for a long time. But, hopefully this VA in Seattle will get my outside consult processed as soon as possible. I feel pretty good about it because this VA just seems much more progressive and advanced. Anyways, sorry for the long rant. I hope your weekend is going well. (:
