Are certain FFS teams more specialized or competent with certain facial anthropometries?

Hi there!

Although I presently live in Flanders, Belgium, I'm originally from a Southern European country (Portugal). The anthropometric features in Flanders are subtly but definitely different from those in Portugal. So far, I went to only one facial surgeon (Dr. Bart Van De Ven, in Antwerp), mainly because of its proximity from home (20 minute ride). I liked his way of being, was very happy with his simulation and with the price tag.

What I would like to know is, apart from certain Asian FFS teams specialized in Asian facial features, are there FFS-teams better than others with Iberian / Southern European facial anthropometries? For instance, would it make sense to have a consultation with the Spain-based Facial Team or with a Brazilian FFS team, just for that reason? Or are aesthetics between these two anthropometries so close that it wouldn't make much of a difference?

Sorry if this is a silly question... I know you girls will tell me to seek a second or even a third opinion, and I'll probably do, but I was just wondering if someone on the forum had some (preferably experience-based) advice or opinion. Thanks beforehand!

Hugs, Sarah

Hi Sarah,

Wish I knew how to answer this but I can give you my perspective.  I'm Asian so initially, I thought about going to a surgeon who specializes in Asian features but after some research, I think it depends much more on the general skill of the surgeon instead of where they live and what race and nationality they predominately work on.

Mainly, female and male bone structure in different races are different but I think there are definitive different traits between a male and female skull which the competent surgeons can work with based on your beginning point.  Anyway, that is what I've read and experienced when I had my ffs.

Thank you! [emoji4] I already had that impression and you know confirm it. I have a second appointment scheduled with Dr. Van De Ven to discuss a few details and schedule the FFS. I like his results and found his simulation very appealing and close to what I seek, aesthetically. I'm pretty sure I'll stick with him, but I'm still not shutting up my mind to other possibilities.

I think most of the basic gendered features are similar across ethnicities. But there are definitely differences that have to be taken into account. It may not matter if one is south or central European - but it matters when it comes to african or asian ethnicities. Specifically the forehead is often much less of an issue with asian women, while it is more an issue with people of african descent. Conversely cheekbones and eyes as well as wide jaws are less of an issue for Europeans than for Asians, in part because of different beauty standards for women in these countries. Consequently asian surgeons, specifically korean surgeons are apparently very good in cheekbone and jaw modelling as well as face shortening, while Europeans and Americans focus more on brow bone, forehead and chin.
The most extreme difference is that asians often seek cheekbone reduction while europeans and latin amricans and caucasian americans often rather get cheek implants.

Fascinating question.  I've noticed from galleries that surgeons tend to have a "look".  We also know that beauty is definitely regionally defined.

Good luck with your search.

Dear Sarah

I think so too, that the facial anthropometrics have to be taken into account, but the individual characteristic of your specific face is a very important factor as well. Because your face in unique... And your face may needs more of procedure A and less of procedure B to reach the from you expected result. I think as well, that it is more challenging for example for an asian surgeon to have a good eye for an european face and vice versa. But a good surgeon will have a look at your ethnic group so or so...

I had my surgery also with Dr. van de Ven and I'm more than happy with the outcome! Dr. van de Ven made a fantastic job, which was everything else than easy, because I had a lot of testosterone damages ... :-(

Cheers...  :)
