Cindi, Although I do respectfully disagree with your theology I thank you for your answer.
I enjoy a good discussion. But I think that your arguments actually can favor my perspective.
QuoteThe Lord said that all that come before him are but thieves and robbers.
I don't disagree as I stated above. I don't put him in the lowliest position. He would put himself there, as we should try to put ourselves. So, a person putting himself before Christ could be a thief or robber.
QuoteHe told the disciples to follow him.
Interpretations may vary, but I take this to mean to follow his lead, to have faith in those who are faithless, to forgive without vengeance, to love when someone smites you, to be filled with charity and grace. It does not say to me to put him first. He also said "Give that which is Ceasar's unto Ceasar." That does not mean to put Ceasar first.
QuoteHe also said that we should love the Lord our God with all our heart.
Again, love is not to put someone first. To love, you must give of yourself. It requires no one else. If anything, to me, this could mean to put God above Christ. My interpretation of the doctrine is that Christ is God's son. They are two different entities.
QuoteThe word of God speaks about following after righteousness.
And righteousness follows no one.
QuoteAnd we know it says that Christ....
I would interject that instead of "we know" I would say "the scriptures say". For we know nothing when it comes to faith. We can only believe. There are no facts to bear a knowledge.
Quoteis made unto us wisdom and righteousness and sanctification and redemption. It also says follow after the truth and we know that Jesus said he is the way, the truth and the life. That leaves little room for placing man or ourselves first.
"the way, the truth, and the life." This does not disagree with my perspective at all.
QuoteIf we love the Lord with all our heart and follow the leading of his Spirit we will tend to help those who are esteemed the least or little. Or at least I would hope so.
... and the second part of that is to love our neighbor with equal fervor. There were two parts to Christ's statement of loving God. "Love God with all thy might, mind, and strength AND love thy neighbor as thyself. Of these come all the commandments." Again... the message is love, charity, and grace.
QuoteBut, having said that I respect your right to disagree and thank you again for the input. I'm just trying to think some things through and the answers have helped greatly.
One of these days I may actually know what is going on in my life.
Thanks.
Frank
You may never know Frank. Life is a journey and we don't reach our destination until it's over. Christ said "I am the way". His example was the "way" or direction our life should take.
You notice that Christ did not request or require adoration of any kind in his life time. It was his meekness and message that were so powerful. He never asked us to put him on a pedestal above us. Neither did he do this himself.
I don't think that you really disagree with my post necessarily. It's just a small difference in semantics. But it is a very large difference in perspective. We can not truly love and forgive until we completely give up our self...... to put us "below" all else.
