Medium-sized Bird

Hi folks.

I'm a 17-year-old nonbinary person from Massachusetts who just came to terms with my identity this year. Before then I surrounded myself with a lot of negativity and intolerance that I've been trying to unlearn. I am still in the process of learning about myself and about the process of transitioning. The world is turning out to be much nastier than I thought it was and recent events are only continuing to discourage. But I am in a supportive environment and I am trying to learn to be proud.

I like games a lot, and like art and design even more, so I'm currently working to hone my skills in character design and concept art in the hopes of going into those fields later on. Will be going to school next year. My dream is to be able to design characters and stories that are capable of expanding others' views of gender identity in a similar way to how my ideas about it have changed. But that'll be a long time from now.

Thanks for having me and looking forward to getting to talk with you all.

Hello Bird, welcome to Susan's!

You are describing a great future and I think you will find the world far more accepting of the gender identity spectrum when you are running full-tilt with your career.  I know things aren't currently perfect and the past was worse, but the trend is obvious - the world will catch up with us.

Games, art and design.  In the past those were not very well connected as engineering constraints kept the three pretty much separated.  As tools have evolved, creativity and talent can be directly applied - and in the future this will become increasingly powerful in shaping social impressions, much as other forms of media had such an impact on previous generations.  I think you have great goals and I want to see you nail it.

Glad to see you here!
