I think one of my computers has been hacked

I was using my laptop and the touchpad pointer stopped working. I started using the mouse and that was ok and then it started moving by itself. I closed off my wifi and watched for a few minutes and a few programs opened at random. I've turned it off.

I'm on my desk top now and changed my passwords. Anything else I should do?

My bank accounts etc are under separate passwords and I use separate passwords for everything.

If you suspect a virus, go to the apple store with your desktop and locate a virus program by requesting "virus". If you purchase it with your desktop, it should be available to your laptop when you bring it up again.

The other option would be to restore your system from your last full backup. You will lose any updates after the backup however I suspect much of your work is being done on the desktop so that might not be an issue.

I run AVG anti-virus continually and have dedicated external backup hard drives on each computer, set to back up every whatever time it is set for (every six hours or so).

I'm thinking it may be a fault on the laptop as I'm thinking that I'm not an easy user to hack. My laptop is 'only' 4 years old but I hammer my computers. The laptop would run 18-20 hours a day 356. My desk top is new and is running fine with no evidence of infiltration. I use double access security on everything and I change major passwords regularly.

I'm probably more security conscious than the average user, which doesn't mean anything to a good hacker.

I think I'll leave the laptop off and take it into Mac store and say 'hey turn it on and see what you think.'

How is you storage level...is there enough for windows to run? Over heating can have the same kind of weird stuff happen. I would probably run an online scan of your system..."House call"

Hope its not serious

Mmm turned it on and a message came up "Share drive request blocked"

I've run a scan on it and reset passwords, again.

Hitting Option D or D did nothing.

(Liz I use a Mac so microsoft stuff doesn't work with me.)

Nothing on my phone, pad or desk top. I hooked into my university account and had it scan me. (Then again that gets so many hits it should be called moon.) and nothing untoward.

Mmm
The laptop is now behaving. I think I had someone inside and I think I'll wipe the drive and rebuild it.

That's a good call -- wiping the drive. I'd suggest you put it in target mode and scan it from a known good computer. That's also the safest way to wipe the disk, if you use the infected machine to clean itself all bets are off.

Hacks are virtually all automated. If you've been actively targeted, I suggest upping paranoia levels.

Sadie,
Unfortunately I get attacked often. The nature of my job.

I'm using a government account to scan me in retro

I just feel a bit sad. I've had a bad time, I've been trying to be strong and I'm fighting with everything I have and I can see a big poster board saying.

Give Up

Some times I feel like it.

Keep going she says, it is all I have.

Hi Cindy, I had a similar problem. I have been delaying my upgrades and when I ok'd the upgrade to Outlook, Skype and Google,  I closed my laptop. The next day my screen went blank and In an irratated mood hit a few programs quite a few times, then the screen came on and srarted to flash all the programs I had tried to load. Went to Alt+Cap+Del and cleared the running programs. Its now fine.
When we first start our journey the perception and moral values all dramatically change in wonderment. As we evolve further it all becomes normal again but the journey has changed us forever.

  Cindy,

You won't allow me to give up so my dear friend you cannot either.

We know it can get hard . So many of us know how hard it gets and how tempting it can be to just  be done with it and give up, My own thoughts have been running that way, but we persevere.

Cindy

Thanks everyone.

A computer hack makes more of life than life does.

Mmm sorry I revealed a bit too much of my soul or did I.

I'm also trying to write an obituary for my sister. I'm the last in my family.

I feel someone is intruding on me in a personal time and I have a tendency to destroy anyone who does that.
Mmm I'm doing a lot of soul searching for a soulless person.

I'm feeling unsettled

Well personally I think you feeling unsettled is understandable Cindy. Would that I could  give you a real hug.
