First openly transgender state legislator elected in Virginia

"Virginia House of Delegates candidate Danica Roem (D) has defeated longtime Del. Robert Marshall (R), becoming Virginia's first openly transgender elected official and one of just few in the nation, according to The Washington Post.

"'Danica will bring a reporter's eye to Richmond, and we eagerly anticipate her results-oriented approach to deliver for her constituents in the 13th,' Virginia House Democratic Caucus Leader David J. Toscano and Caucus Chair Charniele Herring said in a statement.

"LGBTQ advocates hailed the victory on Tuesday evening, with the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) calling it 'a clear warning to anti-equality lawmakers across the country.'"

Yes... so happy for her. One District over.

Interestingly enough: When I started to transition I was warned to not go in that area due to too many transphobic people around. And now they elected Danica Roem. She did run on all local issues and I hope she can move a lot of things in the right direction.

What makes this even better is that she managed to overturn Bob Marshall a well known bigot and homophobe. Also introduced several bills each year to limit women rights and transgender rights. So glad to see him gone.

Also gives me a bit of hope for the society in general. Seems like all the progress of the last few years for the LGBTQ community cannot be stopped!

It gives me great hope that the next generation will be accepted and allowed equality. I hope this is just "one giant leap for mankind"

Finally some good news!

We should also mention Andrea Jenkins, City Council of Minneapolis and also a proud trans women!

The first I know of was Stu Rasmussen of silverton Oregon. A trailblazer. So it continues and I hope it picks up speed.

The incumbent (Bob Marshall) that Danica Roem defeated is a strident homophobe/transphobe, who wrote an anti-trans "bathroom bill" that fortunately he couldn't get the Virginia Legislature to enact.  Marshall bragged openly that he was the state's "Homophobe-in-Chief."  He refused to debate Roem, and dead-named her and referred to her as "him" throughout the campaign.

After the results were in, a reporter asked Roem whether she had anything to say about her opponent.  She answered, "I don't attack my constituents.  Bob's my constituent now."

Now THAT's classy!  That had had to hurt him even more than if she had trashed him.

Great comment from Danica. 

I saw the entire interview this morning. I was so touched, I cried for a while.

Her relationship with Joe Biden and the background of it was just so heartbreaking.

And finally her response to the Bob Marshall question... after the way he treated her during the entire campaign is just a class by itself. Instead of re-hashing anything she reached out and made it clear she will be treating him like any other constituent.

I really hope she does not stop at state delegate.

So cool. So different from certain other elected officials who viciously attack everyone!
Also, who willingly labels themselves as a homophobe or transphobe? Does he not know that the -phobe portion means 'fear of'? He's willingly saying he's afraid of us?

Is it really a left or right thing? I mean I am right and I am trans. Neither the left or right owns me.

Does anyone really know how many LGBT that are right instead of left? I do and there are more on the right if they are more Libertarian than Republican.

I am a Log Cabin Republican. Yes we are a real thing and more Libertarian than anything.

But this is my big question to make others think. Why should we choose or have to choose sides? The two dominate parties tell us what we want to hear and tell us we should vote for them. Well I own a business that is somewhat successful, I pay taxes and have employees in which I can't afford health insurance for them anymore. Before anyone says ->-bleeped-<-, I live in a mobile home but have seven trucks that provide a living for me. So no I don't have a McMansion and have Gardeners or whatever else. I mow my own grass. LOL That could go both ways or meanings.

This is the deal with me. I don't want to be called out. I want to be just another woman even though I am not. But I would want the media to portray me that way, just another woman politician. I am trans so what is the big deal? Why should it be to the media? All I really want is to be me without all the "hoopla and fan fare".

Yes it is a good thing she was elected but does she really want the attention or to just do her job?

I have followed Danica's campaign for the past 8 month (she run in a neighboring district). She always pointed out that her focus is on local issues, on the forefront fixing traffic congestion and responsible growth. She never wanted the attention for being transgender. She wants to focus on making the live in her district better.
