My daughter is transitioning and wants me to name her. I like all of these names, but I'm having a hard time choosing.

Hi, ljw57!

Welcome to Susan's.  Please feel free to stop by the Introductions forum to tell the members about yourself.

I am not sure how I could choose a name for someone I know nothing about.  A name is such a personal thing.  Maybe you could tell us something about your daughter.

I do want to thank you for supporting her and helping her in this way.

Here is some information that we like to share with new members:

Laurie

Hi ljw57

I'm Laurie, first thing I need to say is it sure is weird to be writing to myself though you got the age wrong.
You see I am ljw and I'm 65. lol It just struck me as strange someone else using my initials.

Like Kathy I do not have an opinion on a name for someone I do not know. But you should feel honored that she is wanting you to name her. It is a very special privilege she is bestowing upon you. The name you eventually decide on must be as special as she is to you. That she is special to you is obvious by her love for you. So that name should be special for you both. Go with your heart.

Hugs,
   Laurie

Hi ljw57, Welcome to Susan's Place! I have no way of knowing if it fits your daughter, but I like Aria.  :)

See you around the site!

Welcome to Susan's Place. It would help if you described her personality a bit more. Is she free spirited, scholarly, sophisticated or any other words you might use to describe her. In my case, my masculine name wasn't gender neutral but I was able to come up with something similar that was feminine. Others wish to go with a new name completely different than their original name. When you find the right name, your daughter will know it. One other possibility is to test each of the names on the list for a day and see how it sound when it's regularly spoken.

Welcome ljw!  I think it's really sweet that your daughter wants you to name her, and that you have agreed to do so.  Congratulations on your acceptingness and strong parent/child bond!  I think that from that list, my favorite name is Charlotte, but as others have said, it would help to know more about your daughter.

I like Charlotte. It's sweet and classy.

One thing to consider is your daughter's age. People didn't start naming girls Madison until the mid '80s. Obviously you can do whatever you want, but it might sound weird if the name is overly new and she's older.

One of the most beautiful girls I've known was named Elyse.  She had such a kind soul too.  Obviously I'm choosing that one!

you know how far the universe extends outward? i think i go inside just as deep.

10/11/18 - out to the whole world.  100% friends and family support.
11/6/17 - came out to sister, best day of my life
9/5/17 - formal diagnosis and stopping DIY in favor if prescribed HRT
6/18/17 - decided to stop fighting the trans beast, back on DIY.
Too many ups and downs, DIY, purges of self inbetween dates.
Age 10 - suppression and denial began
Age 8 - knew I was different

What a nice gesture of her which also shows how much trust she has and how accepting you are! My favorite is Madison :-)

I picked Heather and Charlotte.  I think that the surname should be taken into account when choosing a forename.  They should sound mellifluous when taken together.

This is what I though as well, which is why I didn't vote for any. There is easily three names there that I like. When I asked on the forum about a name, the first thing I did was add a middle name and my surname to hear how it sounded. fortunately for me, the one that resonated also fit together :)
I left the door open, only a few came through. such is my life.

Charlotte and Heather.

But there seems to be a sense of whether or not a person suits their name, as well, either visually or personality wise. A name is just a name, but sometimes people will point out if asked whether a person "suits" their name. People have pointed out I never really suited my birth name and I asked why and they usually said they didn't know, it was just something that seemed out of joint to them. So I'd see if she seems to suit the name to you and if she herself feels she suits the name.
