Hey

So I've had my initial consultations with the two FFS clinics I'm prepared to consider, and whilst they both have differing philosophies, techniques and all that to consider, I'm somewhat uncertain what to male of the differences in the opinion of how much bone to remove during the Mandible shave.

I've been quoted a full 10mm (this seemed a little radical to me), and by the other, just a few mm, literally 3 or 3.

Such a big difference!

My question - if you've had this proceedure, how much did you have off? I know you your answers are not my guide to my own treatment etc, but I am crooks as to your sentiment regarding your results relative to the scale of the shave.....

Thanks in advance

I had FFS and it included mandable shave and chin shaving. I do not know how many milimeters were removed along the jay and chin lines. I do know at some places the amount of bone removed was more than others. On my left side more bone was removed then on my right side. I know in several spots in the back of the mandable about 10 mm of bone as removed.

The recovery from that proceedure was difficult due to the long incisions inside the jaw line in my mouth. The more bone removed and at a longer length the potential for complications can increase. I did not have an issue.

You could get a third or 4th opinion. If you state the doctors names then others hear that went to the doctor may provide insight.

Interesting that you had Numbers quoted at all. I had to ask and still only got replies from one clinic about it, the others sort of said it depends and we will see...
Now you can try to simulate or let other simulate jaw change on your photos, maybe use VFFS as a starting point and see if you already like that simulation or if you want something changed. Then you can go and ask a surgeon how much mm that would be to reach that goal.

2mm are a subtle change indeed. Facialteam does a few of these subtle jaw changes and I know a lot of people are happy with it , while a few wanted a revision because it was too subtle for them. 10 mm is very strong change, almost like what they do in Korea. This can have impact on the function - taking off too much can endanger the nerves, the stability of the jawbone or the muscles and glands attached to it. Also depending on your age, 10mm will probably cause skin sagging and then you need a lower face and neck lift later. I would either push the ones who said 2mm to do some more, if they are willing to do that, or tell the one doing the 10mm to be more careful and maybe do a little less..
Part of how much can be removed depends on the position of the mental nerve, which can be estimated from X-Rays or CT scans.

Thank you for the replies. It was Facial Team who quoted the more conservative of the two values. They have my CT and I'm inclined to trust their opinions I think more than the other who was happy to state 10mm without any scans at all. I will discuss it all more with them of course, I really don't want to be having revisions if I can help it x

Hi Maddy,

I'm Laurie and it seems you managed to sneak in a few days ago and didn't receive our greeting links of information that is good to know and could help you understand what info we have and rules we try to go by here. So with that said, please let me say, Welcome To Susan's Place! Come on in and take a good look around.  Perhaps I can even get you to hop on over to the Introductions Thread and  create a post to tell us a little bit more about yourself so we can get to know you a little better and greet you properly. I'll add some links and information below that can help you get more out of our site. Please take time to become familiar with them especially the RED one as we are always getting questions that are answered there.
