So for whatever reason I've found myself looking into home IPL devices like the Philips Lumea series, and I've been left with a few questions about their suitability for things like dealing with male-type facial hair.

Was just wondering if anyone has any experience with these devices that they could share.

I was told that those IPL don't remove hair permanently like laser,  I myself use the Tria laser

Same here. I picked up a used Tria on eBay for $225. New run like $600-800. Super painful on facial hair so I'll be going to a professional laser spa soon.

If you have light hair it is useless. You are supposed to pluck your hair and then use black carbon "ink" to fill in the folical. It is relatively cheap but with light hair you are better off going to the electrologist. I don't have dark hair so I do not know how it works on dark hair. It is relatively simple to use. 

I'm fair-pale skinned with brown hair so that shouldn't be an issue.

And I know it's not a permanent removal, but given how quickly I seem to re-shadow after a full shave I'll take temporary reduction happily.

Has anyone has any luck with the carbon dye?

I had 3 sessions of professional laser removal and it got rid of the dark hairs on my body, but I'm left with a ton of blonde on my body and red beard hairs on my face.

Lexi  It seems kind of counter productive to pluck your hairs first as pain reduction is one of the benefits of using the laser. And then to have to keep doing it. Aw heck just get electrolysis. And the carbon is very difficult to apply. At least in my experience.

Well, plucking isn't a big thing for me, since I epilate almost everywhere on my body.
Although, I've not been able to epilate my face.

Unfortunately, I have no electrolysists near where I live. 
Since I'm about an hour away from one, any alternative is worth exploring.

I've done some DIY home electrolysis, but it's really tedious and hard to get myself motivated for it.
