Hello, I'm kinda new to buying dresses online, usually I just go to brick and mortars and buy mediums. I found a dress I'd love to order online, however I'm unsure of which size to select, mainly because I'm worried the shoulder width will be too small. I took a measuring tape and ran it across my shoulders and came up with 17" or 43.8cm, I guess. Would I still be able to fit into the following dress? If so which size should I get? For reference sake I'm 5'9, 150lbs, 30" waist.

I'm really sorry to bother you guys because I'm sure you get questions like this all the time but I've been trying to compare sizes across this site and from stores I've already purchased from, like Target, Forever 21, Macy's, etc and I can't seem to make sense of it. It would seem this dress is really small.

Hi Polly, welcome to Susan's Place! Sizes are almost impossible to nail down, there's no substitute for trying something on. I noticed in the reviews that someone said they were 5'3" and the Large fit great. That's telling right there. See you around the site!

You did not mention your waist size. When you go shopping compare all three Breast, waist, and Hip sizes against the size chart. Based on the size chart on Venus.com and your hips are around 40 you would wear a size 10. We cannot rely on these charts especially when the products are coming from the far east. I recently bought a blouse on ebay that said it was XXL and it would only fit me if I went through the Shrinky-dink.  You may want to look through Venus as they have nice clothes at low prices.

Welcome to Susan's Place. Because I am tall, I often need to order online so I look for a size chart on the web site. Fortunately this site has one so you need to have all your measurements be equal or smaller that the values in the chart. Sometimes in the case of a lose skirt, you can go with the waist measurement because the skirt will allow for larger hips.

I just spent the last three hours browsing eShakti.com, that site is absolutely amazing! I spend most of my dress shopping time trying to find long sleeve high neck maxi dresses and this site let's you turn almost everything into that! It's easily the best dress store I've come across online. Just about every dress is $50 - $70, plus another $10 to have it custom fitted, which is pretty good considering they're of really nice quality. I'm going to order a couple and I'll report back.

What is an XXL in one country, catalogue or manufacturer may be a L in another and vice versa.  There is no substitute for trying stuff on.   It is possible to use used clothing stores to cost effectively explore sizing between some of those variables.   The one thing I have learned is that "one size fits all" excludes me!

I consulted the size chart and it had all the right measurements but was not even close when it arrived. I usually use stores like JC Penny, Asos, LTS because at six four most off the shelf stuff does not fit. These stores add a little extra length with their "tall" sizes. It's a rare day in May when I can just pop over to the store and pull something off the shelf. That's why online shopping is so important to me. That also goes for shoes. I would love to find something at Goodwill but I had a hard enough time finding guy clothes that fit. When I got to nearly 300 lbs it was even harder. Thankfully I can wear a size 16 tall, now that I am down to 220.

Early on I thought my broad shoulders would be a problem with womenswear, but I've found it's seldom an issue for me. As with any clothing shopper, you want to learn to buy the things that emphasize your assets and de-emphasize your figure issues. There are no solid standards in sizing for women's clothing and actual sizes vary widely. The only way to be sure is to try things on. Of course, with online shopping that can be costly and time consuming, but it's possible. Try shopping from the few online sellers that offer free return postage. I did an extensive search for these awhile back and now only shop from this list. They all offer free returns:

Asos, Foot Locker, Gap,  Old Navy, Banana Republic, Macy's, Zappo's

I've done well so far ordering from Macy's and Zappo's. Zappo's has a great search system that ferrets down things. They used to be just a shoe dealer, but now have a full line of clothes as well. Asos is well known for their tall sizes, BTW. Don't be too put off by the high prices of many items at these stores. They all off sale sections and usually run 20% off or free shipping code deals that bring down the prices. Shop carefully and you'll do fine.

Having something made from measurements works better. Because many if not most of us are built differently than cis women, off the rack stuff may not fit right, especially dresses. I'm a 24 on top and 22 on the bottom and I don't have an ass.
