It's a sad fact that one those little follicles have been starved of their blood supply by DHT for too long, there dead for good. Finasteride will slowly cleanse the follicles and will improve the blood supply, but if you're too late, they're not gonna grow back. Too often I hear finasteride talked about as a miracle drug, alas it's not, it will not regrow hair, just promote growth of dying (but still viable) follicles.

The window is supposedly 2-7 years for a follicle, but it's one of those you can't know until you try things.

SO My hair is getting almost to my shoulder and still no filling in enough where I had male pattern balding.  I know wigs are an option one I do not like. and surgery to relocate my hairline, and moving hair around.  Has anyone had a great result with those, or with Rogaine or Propecia (Finesteride)?

Love and Hugs Marcie

It is my understanding that Rogaine ( minoxidal) only works on balding on the crown of the head and doesn't work on hairline hair follicles.  I believe finasteride works for all head hair but mainly prevents hair loss, not hair regrowth from what has already been lost.  I had a slight receded hairline before hrt and after 17 months I have some fuzzy baby hairs coming in.  No real regrowth, but no more hair loss either.

This is embarrassing for me to post but at 3 months hrt I noticed my receding hair line has been filling in a bit. It's no where near a female hairline yet or where I want it to be but there's hope!

I can't say for everyone but hang in there and give it a try. There's nothing to lose! If it worked for me it could work for you too

I wanted to add to this thread: Remember that every tiny bit of hair growth matters a lot, and there is no reason not to use all medicines out there even if you don't think it will give you full coverage. There is a threshold for transplant success in amount of balding and available transplant hair, and not being over that threshold is all that matters. (And every single hair you don't have to fill in with a transplant is literally money off the final bill as well.)

(Particularly since it's not like anyone on HRT should care about the side effects of Finasteride that often drives cis-guys away from it. ;D )

Respectfully, I disagree. The loss of libido for some transwomen should definitely be a concern. There are some who are married or in committed sexual relationships that can/will suffer from low libido.

Very, very small dosages of Finasteride are said to be effective for combating hair loss while not exhibiting the undesirable sexual side effects.

Oh, certainly I wasn't saying in general that libido was not a concern. This was assuming the Propecia level dosage since the thread was about hair loss. The full proscar dosage is a different matter entirely. But anyone on HRT is already by default way, way beyond what the Propecia level dosages can possibly ever do is what I meant.

My apologies.
I thought your were talking about the side effects that steer cis-males away from finasteride, as loss of libido and function are two of the biggest.

I'm interested to try this coffee thing out.  I'm a little thin in the front on top, and a little in the back on top and it bums me out.  I'm hoping that HRT will stop the thinning at least, but I'm also hoping for maybe a little regrowth.  We shall see, but trying coffee can't hurt.   :D

I did not start losing hair on the top of my head until I turned 40. (I am 50 now). I have been taking Estradol and Spiro for 3 months now. I was not expecting my hair growth on my head to improve, but the volume of hair where it had been very thin has now doubled. I had been looking into hair transplants, but now I will wait a few more months to see if the hair continues to fill in. I want to say while 80% of the hormones effects I experienced seem similar to those I have read about with other girls my progress has been different and I am sure because it is helping me grow hair that is not a guarantee that it will help anyone else.
