HELLO, FRIENDS!!!
This year is the year I change my name, and I've gotten consent from one of my parents, so I just need to speak to the other. Soon I'll be a mister, which I am absolutely ECSTATIC about!!
I'm just a little bit worried about a couple of things:
- How did you guys get used to your new names? I know this sounds super dumb, but barely anybody in real life calls me Verny, let alone Mr Vernon Devereaux, so I'm a tiny bit nervous about signing things and such.
- Did any of you keep your transition private post-name change? I'm looking to get it changed because I'm coming up to my final exams, and I want my qualifications to have my proper name on them, but I don't really want any of my classmates knowing.

I haven't legally changed my name, but I have a few friends who know my new name who have been calling me by it since I came out to them. It only took a week or so to get used to it. Maybe ask the friends of yours who do know to refer to you by your preferred, soon-to-be legal name. They'll have to get used to calling you by your new name and gender at some point anyway. Good luck!

ETA: I'm planning to go as stealth as possible after my legal name change. However, living in a small town, everyone is going to know soon, so I'd have to move in order for people not to know. I do have an open-ended invitation to move out of state, so I'm considering moving at least after my legal name and gender marker changes on IDs, since the process is so easy in my state.

Hey Verny, I like your name.

In my experience, you get used to it pretty quickly. In the beginning (weeks and months) it was weird because people around me (very cool people) made a conscious effort to address me by my new name a lot, so they would get used to it.

However them practicing made me get used to it faster, too. Now (after 3 years) it's the most normal thing in the world for me.

I came out to everyone at the same time I announced my new name.

My current name isn't very different from my given name so no adjustment was needed. In fact my nickname/shortened version of my name was able to stay the same. I transitioned on the job and purposely made it public as to educate the community and to make life easier for me. But i know that I am fortunate enough to have that luxury of a supportive environment and that is not always the case.

I'll tell you what was a PITA: changing my name on all of those documents! They're endless! And every time I thought I'd remembered everything and gotten them all, a piece of mail would come with my old name or I'd get a call from a service I use. I still get the odd wrong name mail and it's been 4 years.

⇧THIS!  My name has legally been changed for over a year, and literally yesterday I received a piece of junk mail with my deadname on it.  Into the garbage it went, but not before tearing it to pieces first.  My deadname is what gives me the most dysphoria, so I enjoyed shredding that junk mail, let me tell you!

I've been called Ryu/Ryuichi since around 2005, so for me to make the jump to making it my legal name in November of 2016 was nbd for me to get used to.

However, signing my new name on legal documents is still taking me some getting used to.  Every now and then, I'll take out a piece of paper and sign my name over and over a few times, especially since going home this past December and having to sign some legal documents for my Mom.  Unfortunately, she still refers to me by my deadname (I'm working on her still), so my first impulse was to start signing the legal document with my deadname! *facepalm*  Of course, after a couple of letters in, I realized my mistake, crossed out the mistake and signed with my correct name.  I still feel stupid for doing so, especially asfter the "seemingly millions" of things I had to sign for my name change!

So for me, I'm used to hearing my name, but apparently signing it is a whole nother matter!

My legal name change certificate just arrived today in the post and I can't keep from staring at it. It's thrilling and terrifying. So, I guess it's official. I'm not out at work yet (they likely think I'm some kind of lesbian or genderqueer from my presentation), but now need to deal with it.

I better practice my new signature and figure out where to start with the document changing list.

I go get my affidavit from the paper today. Then off to the courthouse to set my court day! I just dropped my first name and took the girly ending off my middle name. Everyone calls me Pao anyway, well my folks still call me dead name and nieces and nephew call me Paoli. But yeah! The strangest bit is I took my husbands name. I am not sure I will ever get used to the Sir name change.
