I am curious if anyone has had any experience with surgeries from Dr. MacPhee in Raleigh, North Carolina. I have set up a consultation with her in a few weeks, but I have yet to meet or talk to anyone who had surgery with her is the past. I like the idea of going local and not waiting the tremendous amount of time on a waiting list that I am currently on with Dr. Bowers. I just want to make sure that I am not sacrificing a good outcome for convenience.

I am hoping I can find someone, or a few people who have had surgery from Dr. MacPhee in the past.

Thanks,
Juilia

Oh hon, yes I am a KM girl and very happy with her. She did a great job with me and I am almost 5 months post-op.

I have considered Dr. McGinn and Dr. Rummer in the past, but thanks to some of my local friends who had GRS with Dr. Keelee, worth of mouth convinced me. After my consultation I was sure I was doing the right thing.

I choose to have the limited depth vaginoplasty that she offers, for different medical and personal reasons. (PM if interested)

I experienced no pain, except for the "normal" pinches and occasional phantom at first. Sensitivity... yes sometimes after long days of work, but not really much. The first week after surgery you have a Foley catheter which feels a bit uncomfortable to me, but I got used to it.

Dr. Keelee and her office staff (Sue, you will soon meet her :) ) are very polite and helpful.

They helped me in all my paperwork's that needed to be filled out and faxed. My medical insurance doesn't cover GRS, so I paid the whole thing myself, but I did manage to get FMLA leave and my RRB (Railroad retirement board) paid some sickness benefit, and my union benefits paid some sickness benefit. My employer doesn't pay any sick leave.

If there's anything you want to ask that's "private" just PM me. Also if you want to see a before and after picture.

Hugs dear.

PS, I have my follow up on March 15, who knows we might run into each other. <3

Thank you so much for your response! It is very encouraging to read what you wrote since I have yet to meet or talk to anyone else about KM. I am a bit curious about the different options I have available, including the limited depth, or just getting an orchiectomy first and then GRS later. One of the reasons I set up this consultation was to know what my options are, and to meet with her and find out more about her experience. I can't tell you how much I would love to be able to stay locally! I do have some other questions and will probably take you up on your offer to send you a PM, once I figure out how to do that (I am fairly new to this website)...

I have my consultation on March 20th, so I will miss you by a few days :)

Thank you so much for posting, and offering your thoughts and experience!!

I'm coming from the other side, went to her for a mastectomy, so I can't speak on other results, but she was wonderful! She's out of network for all insurance but used to be in network so she was very helpful in working with my insurance, including template letters for my GP and mental health professionals if insurance required them. She and her staff are amazingly nice, and her post-op care for me has been amazing. I am incredibly happy with what I had and her personality and bedside manner is amazing, which for me was an important factor. I always feel perfectly welcome to bring any concerns to her, go in however often or infrequently as I need, etc.

Thanks for your response as well! It is very helpful to know her disposition and willingness to help, I think that is really important. It is nice to know that if there are complications, or I need anything in the future, I can just make an appointment and just drive to see her. I do wish she was in-network with insurance, but having some discussions with my insurance company I think it will still cover a fair portion of it, which is much better than my assumption that nothing was going to be covered.

Also, Erin thank you for sending me a PM. I am still figuring out how to reply to it, and will certainly send some questions your way if you don't mind.

Thanks again,
Julia

Yesterday I left her office and it was my last visit (unless something unforeseen happens)

On the way home from Raleigh NC to Richmond VA I was emotional, like after saying goodbye to a great friend.

She is indeed like family. Her doctor/patient relationship is remarkable. <3

So how are things today Juilia?
Did you get my PM?

I posted this on my Facebook page after my last visit with Dr. Keelee MacPhee:

Good morning family and friends. I wanted to write this earlier but I was too emotional and exhausted.

My wife and I were in Raleigh NC for my GRS follow-up visit with Dr. Keelee MacPhee, during my weekend (Wednesday and Thursday) and as expected everything is okay.

My wife is very supportive and has been with me throughout the entire process during the surgery in the hospital, and with each office visit at the Dr.'s office. In between the office visits I have also had a couple of Skype sessions with my Dr.

As some of you know Dr. Keelee MacPhee is a very sweet lady and she takes her doctor/patient relationship to a whole new level, not seen with other doctors. She makes you feel comfortable and it almost feel like we are family... great friends to say the least. I also like to mention Sue, another sweet lady in the office. She is also very kind. They are a great team. She has patiently helped me with all my paperwork.

We arrived the day before and checked in our hotel near by the REX woman center, the hospital where Dr. Keelee MacPhee has her office. (The hospital where she performed the surgery is located in Durham) My wife and I spent a little time shopping across the street from the hotel, and then had dinner at Colden Coral, right next door of our Comfort Inn. We wanted to go downtown and take pictures but it was too windy and cold, so we decided to go to our room and watch TV and I worked a little on my laptop.

The following day after breakfast we checked out and headed over to see our friends. It is always a pleasure stepping into her office. Well after the hugs, exchanging chocolate candy and greetings we headed over to her examination room.  All eyes on me, but I will skip the details. Let's just say that everything is healing and functioning well. Not to mention the happy sensations I am still learning to figure out. So after the examination she told me I don't "need" any more follow-up visits per-se, but she will leave that up to me and I can always contact her. Finally, I was cleared from all restrictions. Bathtub time again, yeah... I like showers, but soaking in a nice hot tub is something I missed the last 6 months.

On our way out my wife and I enjoyed lunch at our favorite restaurant, Vic's Italian & pizzeria, close to the REX woman center. We always have lunch here during our visits. They serve such large portions that we ended up having a delicious carryout for the next day. I did gave my doctor and her staff a gift certificate for this restaurant as a token of my happiness from the surgery and in thanks for the wonderful time we have had in the last 6 months. Dr. Keelee MacPhee is truly an amazing skilled (and artistic) surgeon.

Now off we go back home to Richmond VA. On the way my wife and I talked about the experience and she took a nap while I was driving. Then all of a sudden it got to me. I realized I have pretty much completed my transitioning and the friendly and enjoyable meetings with my doctor and her staff might have come to an end, with the exception of the occasional Facebook interactions. The past 6, 7 months including the consultation, where very intense and I was constantly occupied with my progress, meeting my doctor pretty regularly on skype and in office. I am not good at goodbyes. I cried most of the way home and even when I went to bed to catch a few hours of sleep I was still too emotional to fall asleep. Actually the next morning on my way back from work I was still emotional and shedding a few tears.

I want to thank everyone involved with and helping me with my surgery and recovery. Special thanks to Dr. Keelee MacPhee who gave me the happiest gift of life. My second change in life to be living as the woman I am inside and out.

These are only 3 of the 20 some pictures I posted. :)

Me and dr. Keelee MacPhee:

Me all happy before I leave the hotel to see her:

Well Hi Ms. Blue Sparkles.

I remember seeing you talking with Sue across her desk. I remember my appointment's to set the surgery date with her, just like you, I was totally in heaven. And now yours is next. <3

This week will seem slow, but believe me, soon you are 6 months post-op. <3

My surgery was exactly 6 months ago, same day, Wednesday.

Yes, they are a very great team and will easily attach to you emotionally. Next time ask Keelee about the t-shirt a friend of mine made. She has a picture of it. :)
