Hi all

Just wondering , has transitioning ever made you re-train to a new career , if so what did you do and what do you do now ? Or did you stay in your current job ? This is just a curious ask , as I'm debating changing my job.

I retired for my transition. It was not that I waited until retirement. It just seemed that so many things came together at the same time that compelled me to transition.

While many of us keep the same career path, some of us report having to find new employment else where. This is changing and many employers now have non-discrimination policies.

I've kept the same job but I'll be changing companies this fall.  That isn't my choice.  The company I currently work for lost the contract for the county and a new company will be coming in later on. 

I'm retraining into a healthcare job from insurance broking. I'm hoping it'll help bring it the sides of me that I like quite a bit more than my current job. It'll be a nice break as well.

I'm definitely going to need to retrain. I was working as a regional service tech for large commercial agricultural equipment. I no longer have the physical strength for most of that work but mainly I hurt my back doing it for so long. I am still recovering from surgery for two herniated discs and severely pinched nerves. For me, I cannot risk that kind of damage to my back again. Secondly to that is the agriculture industry is not exactly advanced on most social issues so I don't see being accepted very well. Then even if they saw me as any other woman, well they likely wouldn't listen to anything I had to say.

Anyway, I got into that field because it was what a "farm boy" was "supposed" to do. That and machines made logical sense. Both part of my way of hiding my true self for my lifetime. I no longer wish to hide.

@ Marie:  The answer to your question and your concern really depends on you what you are doing now and what kind of job training have you had and your marketable skills...... and very importantly, if you attended college and university, what degrees did you earn and what related subjects did you major in?

Regarding my transition, I stayed in exactly the same career area but my old male job was the Dept Head of the Accounting Dept in a medium sized company, then about 1 1/2 years ago I quit my (very good) job and I went full-time female in my transition then immediately relocated to another town to start my own Accounting and Tax business as a CPA.... as a self-employed woman.  Being self-employed I missed the entire problem that many transitioners as yourself might have with coming out to the boss.

Back to your question however, if you have training and skills that can be used elsewhere perhaps it might be a good idea to put some job search feelers out there so you can have some options. ....  You can also consider going back to college or even an online or a short term community college class or classes to acquire new job skills.

OH, by the way, your profile picture looks terrific.  Very nice!!!

I'm in healthcare almost 2 years, it's my first job in my career. And while I could probably stay a few years longer, I just feel like I should move on. I need a different challenge but also I think I'd start fresh with a new employer as a woman. My current job is accepting, but I would do this for my own peace of mind. Hoping it can work out

Well I'm at a bit of conundrum really because I'm a owner driver (hgv) It's quite a "macho" world. But you do see the odd few women driving trucks now. But as an owner I do a lot of maintenance work myself too , so a lot of heavy lifting etc. I hear that you do loose a little bit of strength when transitioning so don't want to do myself any harm. But I don't think I could work for somebody after being self employed. Catch 22 really haha. I could go into self employed transport management for a few separate companies if I wanted to. I really don't know lol.

If you like what you're do, keep doing it, would be my advise. The chances are that if the job is physical then even as a women you'd be stronger than many men who drives desks for a living.
On the other hand, if you don't enjoy it, maybe this gives you a natural point to walk away from it.

I do like what I'm doing , but I think about all the people around me. I'm quite well known in the specific area of work I do. I think I'm letting my mind scare me of what will be said and all the s->-bleeped-<-ing behind my back etc.

Trained to be a tram driver & bus driver. Then hotel work, started as a cleaner now manager, took food hygiene course & cook breakfasts/snacks
