Hey!  ;) I've lately started to read and post in this forum community, and here's my second topic. Since i couldn't find any other posts with such information, i have to ask  ::)

How is it with voice alteration? Even if you're fully done with hormones and surgery, will the voice still be male? because i have a really, really bad voice.. If i try to sound girl'ish, it only sounds stupid  :(

There is a surgery that can be performed but not too many have gone through it and you will be hard pressed to find anyone with personal experience.

Unfortunately, the voice you have is the one you will have to work with.  Some of us have managed to learn female speech patterns but we still have the original vocal chords.  There are various programs you can purchase which may or may not be helpful. Some here have used them.

I'm sorry to give you the good news.

Look through the help and how to section in the forums...  we have llots of topics on voice training... even examples of whats possable.  You dont necicarily have to purchace a program or see a voice theripist... <though for some its a must>  Once you hit the post requirements, drop me a line and I'll send you a breakdown of the program Ive figured out.

Good luck...

Hello, freebird,

IMHO it's best to see a voice therapist.  They can do wonders without surgery.

I have enrolled for a voice therapy program but a long time ago I started my own exercises and it has helped me a lot.

I have been told that voice surgery can be hazardous and doesn't always work well.  Were I inclined to get such surgery I would see an otolaryngologist, a voice doctor.

Hope this helps.

Even with a male-type larynx, you can produce a female voice with the right intonation and resonance.

I've been going to a voice therapist and I've gotten satisfying results. As in, everyone on the phone calls me "Ma'am" before I give my name. Before I did the training, when I attempted to present female over the phone I always got called "Sir." So I must have done something right.

In the transgender activist meetings I've attended, I've been surprised at the large number of ladies who haven't bothered to feminize their voices at all, it seems like the majority of them do not feminize. It was startling when one transitioned woman whose looks were absolutely perfect opened her mouth and out came this very male growl.
Here's what I find about compromise--
don't do it if it hurts inside,
'cause either way you're screwed,
eventually you'll find
you may as well feel good;
you may as well have some pride

I lost out big time in the breast department and it's quite depressing to have hardly any......but on the flip side I've been so lucky with my voice which is naturally high and female sounding..

Many transsexuals work on their bodies and image and look stunning but forget about their voice which usually gives them away...

I've heard that throat surgery is quite difficult to perform and doesn't always lead to good results but speech therapy can sometimes help with voice control and phrasing...

Hi Freebird,

Voice surgery is possible, but it has a poor track record, and is quite risky.

Your best bet is to find a good speech/voice therapist. Failing that, you could start doing the exercises yourself. There are a few comercial programs available out there, for example those by Andrea James and Melanie Ann Phillips, and while a lot of people have gotten good results, I don't know if you don't really need to spend the money.

A poster called candieFLA has started a great series of tutorials on Youtube, and judging by the level of control she has gaied of her own voice, she's well worth taking a look at:

Hope it helps,

Hi Hypatia, "hee, hee," Yes yo can smell snow coming, rain to and you can smell spring on the air even before the snow has started melting. Now fort casting the weather is easy enough, how about controlling it?  ;D

Hi Lady Amarant yes there is lot's that can be done with the voice with just voice therapy, I met a few of the girls at the support group here  that took the lessons and got some really amazing results from it. I think there is a good supply of voice therapists in most cities. I am thinking of trying it out sometime in April. But I was one of the lucky ones who has a half way type of voice but It could use a little tuning up.
