Love is not obedience, conformity, or submission. It is a counterfeit love that is contingent upon authority, punishment, or reward. True love is respect and admiration, compassion and kindness, freely given by a healthy, unafraid human being....  - Dan Barker

Anti-vaxxers are more Liberal than Conservative, so I don't see this as a political issue as much as a parents' rights issue.

Agree or disagree with it, I find it a dichotomy after having raised several children with my wife.  The absolutely very last thing I ever wanted was for any government or public entity to tell me how to care for my children.  Period.  So, I am torn on this proposal by these legislators, if I am being honest.

I mean, religiously-oriented conversion therapy is pretty damaging... giving the green light for that instead of banning it for minors is a whole step beyond simply not allowing your kid to transition, which is bad enough. We have other laws in place that prevent child abuse and restriction of necessary medical care, protecting kids from transphobia is another extension of that. Allowing parents to send kids to conversion therapy for bogus moral reasons is the equivalent of allowing them to not vaccinate their kids for bogus pseudo-science reasons.

And frankly, if someone has bought into the practice of conversion therapy, I question how much they truly love their kids or want what's best for them. They've let their religion run their life ahead of common sense and basic compassion.

I'm all for protecting and having complete authority for raising your children, however on this I think the child knows whether or not they are really a girl or boy, even when a parent might think they know better. In my opinion, any parent who loves their child as much as they should, must do everything in their power to make their children feel happy and comfortable including allowing them to transition at the youngest age possible. Think about it, haven't we all felt from a very young age we were born with the wrong parts. I wish everyday that back then I could have told somebody I was really a girl and started transitioning when I was young. This law to me feels like we are going backwards in time. IDK, but I would think a lot of the teenage children are going to be afraid to tell their parents about their gender dysphoria. Maybe due to fear alone. With the legalized authority that may be given to these parents, these teens may think some kind of religious exorcism might be their fate. It's time to move forward. Transgender people exist. We're not mental freaks. We're humans born with the wrong parts. The sad fact is we can correct that with today's science, yet people think it's a disease that will wipe out humanity or something. Frustrating.

Leelah Alcorn's death wasn't enough evidence for them or do they just want to repeat the process in an effort to cleanse their inbred thinking culture of us?

As far as I can tell, the bill would allow people to either be good, caring, parents, or allow them to play the Alcorn card.

I don't think the anti-vaxxers fall into any political mould, rather fad inspired ignorance.  This nonsense started in England with parents who wanted someone to blame for their kid's autism.  They hired a lawyer, who then hired a doctor to "prove" it was caused by the MMR vaccine.  However, there's absolutely no link between they two.  The doctor's article was retracted by Lancet and he has lost his medical licence.  But by that time, the damage had been done with some children dying and many people ignoring fact and science, because some Playboy Playmate said so.
I'm a 65 year old male who has been thinking about SRS for many years.  I also was a  full cross dresser for a few years.  I wear a bra, pantyhose and nail polish daily because it just feels right.

"The bottom line is that the CDC data makes it very difficult to argue that conservatives and liberals share equal blame in the anti-vaccine war. Anti-vaxxers are clearly more associated with the political Left."

Given my nature as an engineer I am built to look at the pessimistic side of things.  Given where my profession went I learned that Murphy was an optimist.  So...  my read on that article is that the intention is to get any parents that can be convinced to play the Alcorn card to go ahead and do it.  Even the most reactionary people I know on the religious right understand that going this route doubles the chances of their child committing suicide as compared to them adopting their predisposition to more quietly reject transition.  This proposed law is the exact opposite from where things need to go.  At least it is just two legislators spewing their hate.  Hopefully the whole legislature will turn it down.

So, pessimist as I am, I am trying to hope.

I am once again ashamed for my home state.  First they deny us the right to legally change our gender, and now this is proposed.

How can these two "public servants" be so heartless and uncaring as to even consider something that will only mean more kids trying to commit suicide?

I feel that this is a simple attempt to "rid the state of transgender kids."

I hope that these two "blankety blanks" are voted OUT of office before this comes up for a vote!

Ugg....

the things done in the name of religion and family values by these people are just reprehensible...

That's all I dare say at this point for fear of lapsing into a 12 hour religious/historical diatribe on the topic of Christianity and the bible....

I was caught at age 16, and my parents had me "fixed, so I'd grow up right". I got "conversion lite", testosterone injections to override what my body was doing and masculinize me, and religious counseling to impress on my the nature of my perversion and make sure I understood that if I ever backslid I would be involuntarily committed and given a course of electroconvulsive and aversion therapy (and a prefrontal lobotomy if uncooperative).

This was considered to be the state of the art in loving parental concern.

The treatment was quite successful, changing me from a quiet, effeminate A student to an angry, hairy and sullen D student, flirting with drugs to dull the pain, and frightened to come out for decades afterward.

I am not entirely sure that allowing this sort of treatment for children today will be in their best interest for their adult lives.

I am pretty sure that there are those in our culture who delight in tormenting those different from themselves. Some have created a profession for themselves and tied it to religious belief systems. They are not however entitled to a guarantee that their business model will be protected by the government.

Earth my body, water my blood, air my breath and fire my spirit.

My personal transition path included medical changes.  The path others take may require no medical intervention, or different care.  We each find our own path. I provide these dates for the curious.

Hi Ainsley,

Unfortunately child abuse has demanded that governments need to get involved.  The extreme examples of children being chained in basements or cages, starved to death, beaten to death, demonstrate this.

Have government and institutions made mistakes.  Yes we're seeing some of that now with refugee children but that doesn't mean we should let parents do whatever they like with their children.

For this law in particular, I don't see it as anything other than permission for child abuse by parents.  Children aren't converted to being trans.  What possible other motive is there for this law?  If you read between the lines, it definitely implies that government is converting our children to being trans and we have to stop it.

Have a nice night,
Paige :)

Sorry, totally disagree with your view.

Government can stay the F outta my life.  ESPECIALLY WHEN IT COMES TO MY CHILDREN.

Thanks, have a good life.  :)

Ouch!

The idea of "reverse HRT" - flooding the body with "normal" hormones in hopes that it makes the trans go away - is stupid and revolting.  It's like the fire department arriving on the scene and pumping gasoline onto the flames.
