I was wondering if anyone had any experience or knew of good literature on the long (decades) term effects of mtf hormone therapy, starting with common anti-androgens such as Spironolactone, drosperinone (I'm aware this one is fairly recent), or flutamide, especially in those who have not undergone an orchiectomy.

It would be difficult to find what your asking for. Spiro was a heart medication and has a long recorded history in that area. One of our member has used it for around thirty years and other than the expected side effect, hasn't had any issues with it.

Estradiol is another problem. We used a number of estrogens with the most common one being Premarin. Premarin had a few issues but many of us have used it for years without problem. Estradiol is relatively new but it should be even safer than Premarin as it's a natural human hormone.

The medications are, as Dena points out, being used for off-label purposes. Research is limited.

Are you transgender, honey? Honestly, your posts read like someone who's doing schoolwork, with us as test subjects.  :)

I didn't read that into the poster's words at all.  Seemed like a realistic question to me and that is why I clicked on this one.  I was curious as to what the long-term effects might be, not that it would effect my decision to stay on HRT honestly.  And even if the poster is using this site for research purposes, I say the more information out there the better.  If they are using this site for research, what an optimal place to go.

Just my take and if my history on reading people is any indication, I'm probably wrong.  I have such a problem reading people.  LOL

As far as my questions seeming like schoolwork, I am autistic (as mentioned in a previous post) and thus highly analytical and literal. Due to this condition I have difficulty processing emotion. Furthermore, I am a doctoral student. This is just how my thoughts formulate. I am not certain what I am yet, but am currently leaning toward trans female hence this post, and my other two, both of which came up as I'm determining my own identity in the only way my brain can functionally process: through research. So yes, this is a serious question which I am asking for my own sake, not for the sake of academia. Does this help?

Thanks for straightening me out.  :)

From what I've read, the consensus in the medical community today is that sex hormones are generally well-tolerated.   There are negative side effects in some people, but they are generally rare and well managed with regular annual physical check ups.
I tend to give greater weight to the positive side effects,  which for me, bigger boobs, fuller hips, softer skin, feeling right about myself, far outweigh any negatives.
