Slowly but surely I have been coming out to family and friends. I have even compiled a list of those I want to tell sooner rather than later. I told Mom last October and then my best friend in January. Nieces, nephew, (former) sis-in-law (more family to me than my brother, that is for sure!) in April and then 2 close friends in May. Been waiting for an opportunity to open up to the next couple on my list. Everybody's busy; work, they are raising 12 year old twins and I was pre-occupied the first half of the year.

Finally had the chance yesterday while attending a pool party. We separated from the group and I told them I was transitioning. Long story short, they were both accepting and supportive, I expected as much though. Still I always have a bit of concern. They told me they will have lots of questions for me, knowing them as I do that comes as no surprise, I'm the first transgender they know. I shared that I am my first too! We're camping together at the end of August so I'd better prepare myself for some interesting campfire discussions, not gonna be the usual "pass me another marshmallow please".

On another note, I have not yet asked any of my friends or family  to use my new name. My gender therapist does and those I interact with in a virtual peer support group that she sponsors do too. But, as I was leaving the party on Saturday night I got a hug and a kiss from a friend I came out to in May. She knows my chosen name. During the hug she whispered in my ear, good night Perry! We looked at each other and exchanged the biggest smiles, it was terrific!

I wish I could share my family and friends with those on here who are not as fortunate to share the acceptance I have been privileged to experience on this journey.

Congratulations, Perry!  Every time you come out, it gets a little easier for the next time.  I am glad that your friends were supportive.
